Subscriptions now shape which console you buy as much as the hardware does. Here is what each one gives you and what it costs, with official US prices as of 1 November 2026. Prices vary by region and can change, so confirm on each official store before you subscribe.

Xbox Game Pass

Essential costs $9.99 a month for online console multiplayer, cloud gaming and 50+ games. Premium, at $14.99, adds a 200+ game library with Xbox-made games within about a year of launch. Ultimate, at $22.99, offers 400+ games, Xbox studio releases on day one except future Call of Duty, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew. PC Game Pass costs $13.99. Xbox cut Ultimate and PC prices on 21 April 2026.

PlayStation Plus

Essential covers online multiplayer, monthly games and cloud saves. Extra adds a catalogue of hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games plus Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium adds classic games, time-limited game trials and cloud streaming. For new members since 20 May 2026, US monthly prices are $10.99, $16.99 and $19.99; the 12-month plans, unchanged in most markets, cost $79.99, $134.99 and $159.99.

Nintendo Switch Online

In the US it costs $3.99 a month or $19.99 a year, or $34.99 a year for a family of up to eight, for online play, cloud saves and NES, Super NES and Game Boy classics. The Expansion Pack, $49.99 a year or $79.99 for a family, adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Sega Genesis libraries, GameCube classics on Switch 2 and selected DLC. Prices rose in Japan in July 2026; US prices did not change.

Ubisoft+ and EA Play

  • Ubisoft+ Classics, $7.99 a month: a catalogue of older Ubisoft games, also included in Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass and PS Plus Extra and Premium.
  • Ubisoft+ Premium, $17.99 a month: new Ubisoft releases from day one in premium editions, with DLC.
  • EA Play, $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year: the EA vault, trials of new games and member discounts; included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
  • EA Play Pro on PC, $16.99 a month or $119.99 a year: new EA games in full at launch.
The best subscription is the one whose games you actually finish.

How to choose

  • Play on Xbox and PC: Game Pass Ultimate.
  • PS5 owner who wants a library: PS Plus Extra, billed annually.
  • Switch 2 owner: base Switch Online for multiplayer; the Expansion Pack only if you love the retro catalogues.
  • Follow one publisher: Ubisoft+ Premium or EA Play Pro for a month around a big release, then cancel.
  • Audit every quarter and cancel what you did not use.
