Binance vs Coinbase vs Kraken vs OKX: An Honest Comparison

Four of the biggest names in crypto, compared on licences, base fees, reserves and track record. No winner, just the facts.

Binance, Coinbase, Kraken and OKX are among the most used crypto exchanges in the world, and they list many of the same assets. Where they differ is structure: who licenses them, how they price trades, how they prove they hold client assets and what they have paid regulators. The figures below come from each exchange's official fee pages and public records as of October 2026. Fees and licences change, so treat this as a starting point, not a ranking.

The four at a glance

  • Binance, founded 2017. Base spot fees of 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, 25% lower when paid in BNB. Licensed by Dubai's VARA and, from January 2026, Abu Dhabi's FSRA; not MiCA-authorized as of July 2026. Monthly proof of reserves using Merkle trees and zk-SNARKs. Pleaded guilty in the US in 2023 and agreed to pay about $4.3 billion.
  • Coinbase, founded 2012 and listed on Nasdaq. Coinbase Advanced charges 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker at the lowest tier. Holds a New York BitLicense and a MiCA licence through Luxembourg. No cryptographic proof of reserves; it files audited accounts. The SEC dropped its lawsuit in 2025; a customer data breach was disclosed in May 2025.
  • Kraken, founded 2011. Kraken Pro's Tier 1 is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, and since July 2026 higher tiers can be reached through assets held, not just volume. MiCA-licensed through Ireland. Publishes Merkle-tree proof of reserves. Paid $30 million in 2023 to settle SEC staking charges.
  • OKX, founded 2017. Base spot fees of 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker. MiCA-licensed through Malta and licensed by Dubai's VARA. Monthly proof of reserves with zk-STARKs. Pleaded guilty in the US in February 2025 and agreed to pay more than $500 million.
Fees are the headline. The licence of the entity that holds your account is the fine print that matters.
Same coins, different rulebooks: the legal entity behind your account matters most.

Where they really differ

Binance and OKX grew up offshore and offer deep derivatives markets, with lower headline fees that suit frequent spot traders. Coinbase and Kraken built their businesses around US and EU rules and charge more at entry level, although both cut fees sharply as volume rises. On transparency, the split is philosophical: Binance, OKX and Kraken publish proof of reserves, while Coinbase points to audited financial statements, which also cover liabilities. Product access depends on where you live; derivatives available to a user in one country may be blocked in another.

In Brazil

  • Binance offers BRL deposits via Pix and filed for Banco Central authorization before the 30 October 2026 deadline.
  • Coinbase has supported Pix since March 2023 and said it would file for Banco Central authorization in the last week of October 2026.
  • OKX documents BRL deposits by Pix and filed for authorization as a virtual-asset broker on 16 October 2026.
  • Kraken: we found no public report of a Banco Central filing, so check its local availability directly.

Risk note: this comparison is general information, not investment advice or a recommendation of any exchange. A filing with the Banco Central is not an authorization. Cryptoassets are highly volatile and, held on an exchange, are generally not covered by deposit insurance. Confirm current fees and licences on official pages before opening an account.

Key takeaways

  • Base-tier spot fees range from 0.08% to 1.20%, depending on the exchange and order type.
  • Coinbase and Kraken hold EU MiCA licences; Binance did not as of July 2026.
  • Binance, OKX and Kraken publish proof of reserves; Coinbase relies on audited accounts.
  • Three of the four had major US enforcement actions; check how each was resolved.
