Crypto in 2026: Where the Market Really Stands
Record highs, Wall Street ETFs, new laws and a record hack. What actually changed in crypto, minus the price predictions.

Crypto ends October 2026 in a sober mood. Bitcoin set an all-time high near $126,000 in October 2025, according to CoinDesk; a year later it traded in the mid-$70,000s after a second straight monthly decline. Then, on 29 October, Binance said a hot-wallet breach had cost about $6.3 billion, which CoinDesk called probably crypto's largest theft. The exchange said customer funds were not touched and that a large part of the stolen money had been frozen. For a busy man, the useful question is not where the price goes next. It is what has actually changed in the plumbing.
What has changed since 2024
- Wall Street wrappers. The US SEC approved spot bitcoin ETFs in January 2024 and spot ether ETFs in May 2024. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust alone passed 700,000 BTC in July 2025, The Block reported.
- Faster listings. In September 2025 the SEC approved generic listing standards for commodity-based trust shares, opening the door to more crypto ETPs without case-by-case rule changes.
- A stablecoin law. The GENIUS Act, signed in July 2025, created the first US federal framework for dollar stablecoins; it takes effect by January 2027 at the latest.
- Europe's rulebook. MiCA now covers the EU, and its transitional period for crypto-asset service providers ended on 1 July 2026.
The infrastructure has matured faster than the asset has calmed down.
What is still unresolved
Washington still lacks a full market-structure law. The CLARITY Act, which would divide oversight between the SEC and the CFTC, failed a Senate procedural vote 49 to 50 on 15 September 2026, although a motion to reconsider keeps it alive. In Brazil, the Banco Central's rules for crypto service providers took effect in February 2026, and the Receita Federal's new DeCripto reporting started in July. Security remains the sector's soft spot: the Binance breach came after the roughly $1.5 billion Bybit hack of February 2025.
How to read the headlines
- Separate the asset from the wrapper: an ETF changes access and custody, not the underlying price risk.
- Treat a balance on an exchange as exposure to that company, not as cash in a bank.
- Follow regulation and security news, not influencers' price targets.
- Remember that bitcoin has fallen by more than half several times; any exposure has to survive that.
Risk note: this article is general information, not investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell any asset. Cryptoassets are highly volatile, can lose most of their value and are not covered by bank deposit guarantees. Speak to a licensed adviser before you invest.
Key takeaways
- Bitcoin's record, near $126,000, dates from October 2025; October 2026 was its second straight losing month.
- ETFs, the GENIUS Act and MiCA have professionalised the plumbing.
- The US market-structure bill is still stuck in the Senate.
- Security is the weak spot: Binance reported a loss of about $6.3 billion on 29 October.
