The Best War Games Right Now: Arma, Hell Let Loose, Squad, Helldivers 2
Milsim, 50-versus-50, co-op chaos or tank battles. Six military games, what each one is really for, and where Arma 4 stands.

Military shooters are not one genre. Some want you to plan for twenty minutes and survive four seconds; others want four friends laughing as an airstrike lands on the wrong squad. Here are six that matter in late 2026, and the kind of evening each one is built for.
Six games, six jobs
- Arma Reforger (Bohemia Interactive; PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5): the serious sandbox. Cold War warfare, huge maps, a Game Master mode and a deep mod scene. Bohemia calls it a bridge to Arma 4, which it has pointed to for 2027.
- Hell Let Loose (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S): 50-versus-50 Second World War battles where officers, logistics and artillery decide fronts. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam launched on 13 August 2026 with mixed early reviews and launch performance complaints.
- Squad (Offworld Industries; PC): large-scale modern combined arms with real communication between squads. PS5 and Xbox Series versions were announced in October 2026 for 2027.
- Helldivers 2 (Arrowhead; PS5, PC, Xbox Series X|S): four-player co-op against alien hordes, satirical and chaotic, with friendly fire always on. It reached Xbox on 26 August 2025.
- War Thunder (Gaijin; PC, PlayStation, Xbox): free-to-play tanks, aircraft and ships across a century of military hardware. The deepest vehicle collection in the genre.
- Ready or Not (VOID Interactive; PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S): slow, tense close-quarters tactical police operations, solo or co-op. Consoles followed on 15 July 2025.
How to choose
Start with your group, not the trailer. Playing alone? War Thunder and Ready or Not respect short sessions. Playing with three friends? Helldivers 2 is the easiest yes in gaming. Want the full machine of an army, with radio chatter, supply runs and a commander who actually commands? That is Hell Let Loose and Squad. And if you want freedom to build your own war, Arma Reforger is the only real answer today.
The best military game is the one that matches how much patience you brought tonight.
Play it well
- Use a good headset with a clear microphone; in Squad and Hell Let Loose, communication is the weapon.
- Join an organised community or clan server: the same game becomes a different, better experience.
- Learn one role properly, medic, engineer or tank crew, before trying to do everything.
- Set a stop time; these games are designed for one more match.
What to watch: Arma 4 news from Bohemia, Squad's 2027 console launch and whether Hell Let Loose: Vietnam's patches win back early doubters. Until then, the genre is in good shape; there has rarely been a better time to enlist, at least virtually.
Key takeaways
- Arma Reforger is the live milsim today; Bohemia has pointed to 2027 for Arma 4.
- Hell Let Loose: Vietnam launched 13 August 2026 to mixed early reviews.
- Squad is PC-only for now, with PS5 and Xbox versions announced for 2027.
- Helldivers 2 is the co-op pick; Ready or Not is the close-quarters tactical one.
