007 First Light and the New Wave of Spy Games

For years, James Bond belonged to cinema and the spy game belonged to Hitman. 007 First Light merged the two. IO Interactive, the Danish studio behind Agent 47, delivered an origin story for a young Bond, and it became the studio's fastest-selling game.

007 First Light: the facts

• Developer: IO Interactive, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios.
• Release: 27 May 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, after a delay from March announced in December 2025.
• Bond: a young recruit before the double-0, played by Patrick Gibson.
• Reviews: an 87 on OpenCritic, with 97% of critics recommending it.
• Sales: over 4 million units in roughly three months, announced by IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios on 20 August 2026.
• Switch 2: delayed, now dated 18 March 2027, confirmed by IO in October 2026.

Why it works

IO already had the hardest part solved: sandbox levels where you choose between disguise, gadget, distraction or force. First Light adds what Hitman never had, a character with doubts, charm and a story arc, and wraps it in set pieces worthy of the films. The result plays like a Bond film you direct yourself, which is exactly the fantasy the license has always promised. It is also a reminder that a licence is only as good as the studio holding it: IO spent a decade refining Hitman's systems before it was handed the keys to Bond.

The best spy games do not reward the fastest trigger. They reward the coolest head.

• Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater (Konami, 28 August 2025; PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC): a remake of the 2004 classic, an 85 on OpenCritic and over 2 million sold, per Konami.
• Hitman World of Assassination (IO Interactive): the trilogy in one package and still the purest social-stealth sandbox there is.
• Splinter Cell remake (Ubisoft): officially in development since 2021, with no release date; talk of 2027 remains unconfirmed.
• Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yōtei are not spy games, but both reward the same patience and reading of a space.

Where to start? If you want one game, play First Light, ideally on a big screen with good sound. If you have played it, Metal Gear Solid Delta is the natural next mission. And keep an eye on Amazon MGM: with Denis Villeneuve directing the next Bond film, the game is the franchise's main event until the next film arrives.
