Whisky's Season of Last Bottles: Hedonism, Macallan and Diageo Call Time
In one week, three famous collector series stopped or paused. What ended, what you can still buy, and what it says about the whisky market.

The whisky calendar usually fills up in November. This year it is full of goodbyes. Within a week, three well-known collector series were ended or paused, according to The Spirits Business: Compass Box's Hedonism, The Macallan's A Night on Earth and Diageo's Special Releases.
Hedonism: the grain-whisky pioneer bows out
On 5 November Compass Box said its annual Hedonism release will end, making the 2026 edition the final one. Its muse is Scottish actor Karen Gillan, illustrated by artist Emma Hack. Hedonism was the brand's first whisky in 2000, created by founder John Glaser, and is credited with reviving blended grain whisky. Since 2024 it has been a limited annual edition, each with art by a different female artist.
"Hedonism made a simple point beautifully: grain whisky deserves a place at the top table," chief executive Nishat Gupte told The Spirits Business. "It has done that job." Limited stock remains through Master of Malt in the UK and the brand's website in the US. Orchard House will now lead the range.
The Macallan's New Orleans finale
On 3 November The Macallan released A Night on Earth The Finale, the fifth and last edition of its New Year series. Earlier bottlings nodded to Scotland, Jerez de la Frontera and New Zealand; this one celebrates New Orleans, with artwork by local-born artist Hill Spriggins.
- Casks: sherry-seasoned American and European oak.
- Strength and price: 43% ABV, £96 (US$128) per 70cl bottle.
- Where: The Macallan directly, plus Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, Berry Bros & Rudd, Master of Malt and The Whisky Shop in the UK.
- Notes, per the distillery: orange peel, star anise and clove on the nose; vanilla, dried fruit and cherries on the palate.
Diageo presses pause
The biggest absence is Diageo's. The group confirmed to The Spirits Business on 30 October that it has "paused its Special Releases collection for the year" to review feedback. The cask-strength series began in 2001 and gave collectors the first Port Ellen and, a year later, the first Brora bottlings. The pause comes as Diageo restructures under chief executive Dave Lewis, with 2,000 job cuts pledged.
A last edition is a good story. It is not a guarantee: the bottle is worth what you enjoy pouring from it.
For collectors, final editions often attract attention, but scarcity is no promise: resale prices can fall as well as rise. This is not investment advice. Buy the bottle you would happily open, store it upright away from light, and drink responsibly.
Key takeaways
- Compass Box says the 2026 Hedonism, with Karen Gillan as muse, is the last of the grain-whisky series launched in 2000.
- The Macallan's A Night on Earth The Finale, the fifth and last edition, went on sale on 3 November at £96 (US$128).
- Diageo has paused its Special Releases for 2026, a cask-strength series that has run since 2001.
- Final editions draw collectors, but scarcity alone does not guarantee value: buy what you want to drink.
