Macallan 1926: A Century-Old Whisky Fetches £2.1m in Speyside

Distilled 100 years ago, one of 40 bottles sold at the first auction ever held at The Macallan Estate. Why 1926 is whisky's holy grail.

A hundred years after it was distilled, a single bottle of The Macallan 1926 Fine & Rare sold for £2,125,000 (about $2.8 million) including buyer's premium on 9 October 2026, according to The Whiskey Wash and Whisky Advocate. The hammer fell at £1.7 million, in a Sotheby's sale held for the first time at The Macallan Estate in Speyside.

It was not quite an all-time high. The overall whisky auction record still belongs to another 1926 bottle, labelled by the artist Valerio Adami, which Sotheby's sold in London in November 2023 for a hammer price of £1.75 million. But Whisky Advocate reports a new record for a bottle with the Fine & Rare label, beating the one set in 2019.

Why 1926 is the holy grail

  • It was distilled in 1926 and drawn from sherry-seasoned cask No. 263 in 1986, at 60 years old: the oldest whisky The Macallan has released.
  • Only 40 bottles were filled, at 42.6% ABV.
  • The labels differ: a dozen designed by pop artist Sir Peter Blake, a dozen by Valerio Adami, a group of Fine & Rare labels and unique examples, including one hand-painted by Michael Dillon.
  • With so few bottles, each one is tracked almost like a painting, and every sale becomes a reference point.
At this level you are not buying a drink. You are buying a date, a cask number and a story nobody can repeat.

The rest of the sale

The Speyside auction totalled £3.3 million ($4.4 million) against an estimate of £2.4 to 3.2 million. All 42 lots sold and 86% beat their high estimates, The Whiskey Wash reports. A complete set of The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars decanters made £350,000, and the opening lot, the Romantica Collection, raised £162,500 for three charities.

  • Not every bottle rose: Whisky Advocate notes that The Reach 81 years old (bottle No. 3) hammered at £105,000, against £240,000 when it sold in October 2022.
  • Recent limited series such as the Red Collection and TIME:SPACE were absent, which Whisky Advocate reads as caution about newer releases.
  • The lesson for collectors: historic, well-documented bottles have held value better than recent collectible editions.

If you see whisky as an investment, remember that auction prices move both ways, fees are high, and storage and authenticity matter. This is not financial advice; talk to a qualified adviser before you buy.
