The last Masters 1000 of the season has become a week of upsets. At the Rolex Paris Masters, played at Paris La Défense Arena from 31 October to 8 November, several of the biggest names are already gone, and the race for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin is down to its last two places.
On Wednesday, 4 November, Lorenzo Musetti beat top seed Alexander Zverev 7-6(5), 6-2 in one hour and 40 minutes, according to Tennis Majors. It was a rough start for Zverev as world No. 1: the German moved to the top of the ATP Rankings on Monday, 2 November, after reaching the Vienna semi-finals. The same day, qualifier Rinky Hijikata came from a set down to beat Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Ignacio Buse beat fourth seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4, as Tennis Tour Calendar's results show.
The week's key results
- Vienna final (ATP 500), 1 November: Carlos Alcaraz d. Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4, his 28th tour-level title and fourth of 2026, won without dropping a set all week.
- Basel final (ATP 500), 1 November: Valentin Vacherot d. Jiri Lehecka 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, his second title after Shanghai 2025.
- Paris, 4 November: Musetti d. Zverev 7-6(5), 6-2; Hijikata d. Djokovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3; Tomas Martin Etcheverry d. Alex de Minaur 7-6(2), 6-3.
- Paris, 4 November: Alcaraz d. Alex Michelsen 7-6(4), 6-3; Arthur Fils d. Tomas Machac 6-3, 7-6(4).
In Basel, Vacherot lost the first set and dropped serve three times in it, then won the next two sets by a single break each. "Sometimes it's about not playing perfect for the whole match and just playing good when it matters," he said, as quoted by Asharq Al-Awsat. Lehecka has now lost his last five finals.
Turin: six in, two to go
According to the ATP Tour, six players have qualified for Turin (15–22 November): Zverev, Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Fils, who sealed his place on Wednesday when Frances Tiafoe lost to Quentin Halys. Cobolli withdrew from Paris with a left leg injury, Tennis Now reports. World No. 2 in the Race, Jannik Sinner, ended his season in October with a knee problem.
The last two places now depend on two Americans still in the draw. If Tommy Paul or Taylor Fritz loses on Thursday, Tiafoe qualifies; if both lose, Spain's Rafael Jodar also goes through, the ATP says. De Minaur and Djokovic, both beaten on Wednesday, are out of the running.
One indoor week in Paris can undo ten months of tennis, or crown them.
On the women's side, the WTA Finals start on 8 November, not in Riyadh but at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California, after the WTA asked to move the event following two years in Saudi Arabia, NBC Sports reported. World No. 1 and defending champion Elena Rybakina leads a field with Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, Coco Gauff and Linda Noskova, according to Tennis Nerd.
The Paris final is on Sunday, 8 November. We will publish the result as soon as it is official.
