The end of the tennis year is played indoors, under lights, with ranking points worth more than ever. On Saturday, 31 October, the two ATP 500 events running in parallel, the Erste Bank Open in Vienna and the Swiss Indoors in Basel, produced two upsets and a race for the ATP Finals that now comes down to a single point.
In Vienna, fifth seed Alex de Minaur beat top seed Alexander Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) after two hours and 33 minutes, converting his third match point, according to Tennis Majors. Zverev, a two-time major champion this year, had cruised past Arthur Fery 6-0, 6-2 in the quarter-finals. The other semi-final featured Carlos Alcaraz, who entered on a wildcard, and Daniil Medvedev.
The weekend's key results
- Vienna semi-final: Alex de Minaur d. Alexander Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4).
- Basel semi-final: Valentin Vacherot d. Taylor Fritz 7-6(5), 6-3.
- Basel semi-final: Jiri Lehecka d. Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Basel delivered a final few predicted. Monaco's Vacherot, who beat Holger Rune in the quarter-finals, will play the second final of his career; his first was the Shanghai Masters in 2025, which he won, as ESPN notes. Eighth seed Lehecka came from a set down against Struff, the German who had earlier knocked out Novak Djokovic. Second seed Arthur Fils retired from his quarter-final against Fritz after losing the first set 6-2 and trailing 2-0 in the second, according to the ATP Tour.
The race to Turin
The biggest absence shapes everything. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner announced on 6 October that his season was over because of a knee injury, the ATP Tour reported, so the two-time defending champion will not play the Nitto ATP Finals. That opens the door to ninth place in the Race. De Minaur holds it with 3,210 points, one point ahead of Spain's Rafael Jodar, according to Tennis Majors.
A season of ten months can come down to one point and one indoor week in Paris.
The Rolex Paris Masters, the last Masters 1000 of the year, begins this week and will settle who goes to Turin. On the women's side, the WTA Finals are scheduled for 7 to 14 November in Riyadh. We will publish the finals as soon as they are official.
