Malaysia has hit pause on one of Asia's most popular remote-work permits. New applications for the DE Rantau Nomad Pass are closed from 1 to 30 November 2026 and reopen on 1 December under what the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), which runs the programme, calls an enhanced framework, according to MDEC's announcement as reported by Travel And Tour World.

The change follows Budget 2027. Tabling it in parliament on 9 October, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said holders who have reached the two-year limit could stay and work remotely for another two years, subject to conditions, Malay Mail reported. MDEC confirmed the transition on 29 October.

The DE Rantau pass is the entry stamp for remote workers who want Kuala Lumpur or Penang as a base.

What changes on 1 December

  • Income bar for tech professionals rises from US$24,000 to US$36,000 a year. The US$60,000 minimum for non-tech professionals is unchanged.
  • Maximum potential stay doubles from 24 to 48 months. Each renewal is approved separately and lasts up to 12 months.
  • A second renewal requires a Renewal Eligibility Report on professional activity, income and tax compliance, with evidence of filings and payments.
  • Second and third renewal applications open on 1 December.

During November, first renewals continue for holders whose initial 12-month passes expire on or before 31 January 2027. Existing approved passes remain valid until they expire, as long as holders respect their conditions. This is an application pause, not a suspension of tourist entry: holiday travel to Malaysia is unaffected.

Why it matters for a mobile professional

Four years is a serious horizon. It turns a one-year experiment into something closer to a base, long enough to sign a proper lease or plan around a family. The tax report is the other signal: Malaysia wants long-stay nomads to show they are organised, not just online. Budget 2027 also says spouses of Category I Employment Pass holders will be allowed to work from next year, subject to conditions.

The new deal is simple: earn more, document more, and Malaysia lets you stay twice as long.

Costs remain modest by global standards. A Click Intelligence study reported by Malay Mail on 30 October ranked Penang the most budget-friendly of 26 cities for digital nomads, at about €850 a month including rent.
