ETIAS Is Due Before Year-End: What Travellers to Europe Need Now

Europe's biometric border is live and its €20 travel authorisation is scheduled for this quarter. The dates, the soft launch and what to do today.

Europe's new digital border is almost complete. The Entry/Exit System (EES), which records the passport details, facial image and fingerprints of non-EU short-stay visitors, has been fully operational across all Schengen countries since 10 April 2026, according to the European Commission. The second piece, ETIAS, is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026, and that quarter is now running.

What ETIAS is, and who needs it

ETIAS is a travel authorisation, not a visa. It applies to visa-free travellers, from countries such as the US, the UK, Canada, Brazil and Australia, making short stays in the Schengen area and Cyprus, 30 countries in total according to the Commission. Travellers who already need a Schengen visa do not need ETIAS, although they are still recorded in the EES.

  • You apply online through the official ETIAS website or app, complete a digital form and pay a one-time fee.
  • The fee is €20, raised from €7 by a European Commission decision in July 2025; applicants under 18 or over 70 do not pay.
  • Most applications are approved within minutes, but approval must arrive before you board.
  • An authorisation is valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and it is linked to the passport, so nothing needs printing.
Renew the passport, renew the ETIAS: the authorisation lives on the document, not on you.

The dates that matter

In the official guidance we checked, the Commission had not yet published the exact go-live day; its April 2026 note said the date would be announced later in 2026. Once it starts, the launch is soft. According to an analysis by the immigration law firm Fragomen, the first six months are a transitional period in which travellers can still enter without ETIAS if they meet all other entry conditions. A further six-month grace period follows, in which only first-time arrivals may enter without one. That points to full enforcement in the second half of 2027.

  • Check your passport's expiry date now: a new passport will need a new ETIAS.
  • Use only the official EU website or app; the Commission warns against third-party sites that add fees or misuse data.
  • Airlines and other carriers will check for an authorisation before departure.
  • The EES still applies: expect fingerprints and a face scan on your first entry, and where available the Travel to Europe app lets you pre-register up to 72 hours ahead.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules and dates can change, so confirm them on official EU channels and, for complex cases such as long stays or residence permits, talk to a qualified immigration adviser.

Key takeaways

  • The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational across all Schengen countries since 10 April 2026.
  • ETIAS is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026; the exact start day is announced by the European Commission.
  • The fee is €20 (free under 18 and over 70) and an authorisation lasts three years or until the passport expires.
  • A six-month transitional period and a further six-month grace period mean full enforcement in the second half of 2027.
