Safes and Hidden Furniture: How to Read the Ratings

Safes and Hidden Furniture: How to Read the Ratings

RSC, TL-15, Class 350, EN 1143-1. The letters on a safe tell you what it resists and for how long. Here is how to read them.

A safe is a promise written in small letters. The heavy door and the glossy paint say little; the label on the inside says almost everything. It tells you what kind of attack the safe was tested against, for how long, and whether it was ever put in a furnace. Learn to read that label and you will buy once, insure properly and sleep better.

Burglary ratings

  • UL RSC (Residential Security Container, under UL 1037): the safe resisted a five-minute attack with common hand tools. A sensible floor, not a vault.
  • UL TL-15 and TL-30 (under UL 687): the safe resisted 15 or 30 minutes of net working time against tools such as drills and grinders. The clock stops whenever a tool leaves the safe.
  • TL-30x6: the same test applied to all six sides, including the floor and back.
  • EN 1143-1: the European standard for safes and vaults, with grades from 0 to XIII. Insurers in many countries set cash and jewellery limits by grade.

Fire ratings

  • A UL Class 350 rating means the interior stayed below 350°F (about 177°C) for the rated time, for example one or two hours. Paper chars only at higher temperatures.
  • Digital media and film need lower temperatures; look for a separate data or media rating if you store drives.
  • European fire classes for paper and data are set by EN 1047-1 and EN 15659. Burglary and fire are different tests, so a safe can be strong in one and weak in the other.
Read the label inside the door before you look at the paint outside.
A library wall can hide a door; the rated safe behind it does the real work.
A library wall can hide a door; the rated safe behind it does the real work.

Install it like you mean it

A safe that can be carried away is just a heavy box. Bolt it to the floor or wall following the manufacturer's instructions, ideally into concrete. Keep codes and keys away from the safe itself, and tell one trusted person, or your lawyer, how to access it if something happens to you. Record serial numbers and keep the receipt and certificate with your insurance papers.

Where hidden furniture fits

  • Bookcase doors, hidden drawers and concealed panels buy discretion. They rarely carry burglary ratings.
  • Use them to hide a rated safe or the entrance to a safe room, not as the only protection for valuables.
  • If you own firearms, storage law in your jurisdiction may require a locked container; concealment alone usually does not meet that standard.
  • Ask the maker for load and installation details, and keep the drawings private.

Key takeaways

  • Burglary and fire ratings are separate tests; check both labels.
  • UL RSC is an entry level; TL-15 and TL-30 are true burglary-resistant safes.
  • In Europe, EN 1143-1 grades are what insurers usually ask for.
  • Concealment furniture hides; it does not resist. Pair it with a rated safe.

FAQ

What is the difference between a UL RSC and a TL-15 safe?

An RSC safe resisted a five-minute attack with common hand tools. A TL-15 safe resisted 15 minutes of net working time with more powerful tools, so it offers much higher burglary resistance.

Does a fireproof safe also stop burglars?

Not necessarily. Fire and burglary are tested separately. Check that the safe carries both a fire rating and a burglary rating.

What does EN 1143-1 mean?

It is the European standard for safes and strongrooms, with grades from 0 to XIII. Higher grades resist longer attacks and usually qualify for higher insurance limits.
