Crypto Custody: Exchange or Hardware Wallet, and How to Stay Safe

Not your keys, not your coins, but your keys are also your problem. A practical guide to holding crypto safely.

Crypto has no bank manager to call. Whoever controls the private key controls the coins, and transfers are final. That is the whole point of the technology and also its biggest trap. In November 2022 FTX collapsed with customer money missing. In February 2025 Bybit lost about $1.5 billion to hackers. On 29 October 2026 Binance reported a loss of about $6.3 billion from a hot wallet, though it said customer funds were not touched. The lesson is not panic. It is to decide deliberately who holds your keys.

Exchange or self-custody

  • On an exchange, the platform holds the keys and you hold an account balance, which is a claim on the company. Convenient for trading, exposed to hacks, freezes and insolvency.
  • In self-custody, you hold the keys in your own wallet. No company can freeze or lose your coins, but nobody can recover them if you lose the key.
  • A hardware wallet, such as those made by Ledger or Trezor, stores keys on a dedicated device and signs transactions offline.
  • Many holders split the difference: small trading balances on a regulated exchange, long-term holdings in self-custody.
Your seed phrase is not a password. It is the vault, the key and the deed in twenty-four words.
A hardware wallet keeps the keys offline; the seed phrase must stay offline too.
A hardware wallet keeps the keys offline; the seed phrase must stay offline too.

Seed phrase hygiene

When you set up a wallet it shows a recovery phrase, usually 12 or 24 words. Anyone with those words can rebuild your wallet anywhere in the world. Write them by hand, never in a phone, cloud note, email or photo. Store copies in two secure places, such as a home safe and a bank deposit box, and consider a steel backup against fire. Buy devices only from the manufacturer or authorised resellers, and set them up yourself. Before moving a large sum, send a small test transaction and do a dry-run recovery. Brazil's Banco Central rules, in force since February 2026, still allow self-custody, provided the wallet owner can be identified when coins move to or from a regulated provider.

Scams to avoid

  • Fake support. Real support staff will never ask for your seed phrase or remote access to your computer.
  • Phishing and look-alike apps. Bookmark official sites, check web addresses and download wallets only from official stores.
  • Romance and investment schemes. A new online friend with a can't-lose platform is the classic pig-butchering script.
  • Physical risk. Kidnappings of crypto holders, including Ledger co-founder David Balland in France in January 2025, make discretion a security tool.

Risk note: this is general security information, not investment or legal advice. No setup removes all risk, and lost keys or a stolen seed phrase usually mean permanent loss. For large holdings, consider professional custody or estate planning advice so that your heirs can access what you own.

Key takeaways

  • On an exchange you own a claim on a company; in self-custody you own the keys.
  • A hardware wallet keeps private keys offline; the seed phrase is the real master key.
  • Never type or photograph a seed phrase, and never share it with support staff.
  • Most losses come from phishing, fake support and careless talk, not broken cryptography.

FAQ

Is it safer to keep crypto on an exchange or in a hardware wallet?

It depends on your discipline. An exchange exposes you to the company's security and solvency; a hardware wallet removes that risk but makes you fully responsible for your seed phrase.

What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?

You can restore your coins on a new device with your seed phrase. If you lose both the device and the phrase, the coins are usually gone for good.

Should I store my seed phrase in a password manager?

Security experts generally advise against keeping a seed phrase on any internet-connected device. Handwritten or steel backups stored in secure places are the common practice.
