Brazil and Space: Alcântara, the AEB and the Next Astronaut

Brazil has a world-class launch site and two citizens who have reached space. What is real, and where the opportunities lie.

Brazil is rarely named in the space race, but it holds a card few countries have: the Alcântara Launch Centre in Maranhão, close to the Equator on the Atlantic coast. Launching near the Equator gives rockets an extra push from Earth's rotation, which matters most for geostationary orbits. The question for decades has been how to turn that geography into an industry.

The pieces on the board

  • AEB, the Brazilian Space Agency, created in 1994, coordinates the national space program and licenses commercial launches.
  • Alcântara, created in 1983 and run by the Brazilian Air Force, gained a Technology Safeguards Agreement with the United States in 2019, which lets rockets with US components launch from there.
  • Alada, a state company created in 2024, markets Alcântara to launch clients and works with the licensing authorities.
  • Brazil signed NASA's Artemis Accords in 2021, joining the US-led principles for lunar exploration.

Brazilians in space

Air Force pilot Marcos Pontes became the first Brazilian in space in March 2006, flying a Soyuz to the International Space Station on the Centenary Mission, named for the 100th anniversary of Santos-Dumont's 14-bis flight. He later served as Minister of Science and Technology and was elected senator for São Paulo in 2022. In June 2022, Victor Hespanha became the second Brazilian to cross the Kármán line, on Blue Origin's NS-21 suborbital flight, after winning his seat in a raffle run by a crypto project. The AEB has announced no new government crewed mission.

Geography gave Brazil the launch site. Policy and capital decide whether it becomes a spaceport.

The commercial push, and a hard start

In December 2025, South Korea's Innospace attempted the first commercial orbital launch from Alcântara with its HANBIT-Nano rocket, carrying small satellites that included Brazilian university payloads. The rocket failed about 33 seconds after liftoff; the investigation traced the failure to a sealing problem in the first-stage engine. Innospace has said it will fly again, and in June 2026 the AEB authorised a new launch. Officials say around 20 contracts with companies from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania are under negotiation.

Where the opportunities are

  • Launch services and ground infrastructure around Alcântara.
  • Small satellites for agriculture, climate and Amazon monitoring.
  • Engineering suppliers and talent from ITA, INPE and the aerospace cluster in São José dos Campos.
  • Space data businesses that use satellite imagery without building satellites.
  • Patience: licensing, insurance and launch windows move slowly, so plan for long cycles.

Key takeaways

  • Alcântara sits close to the Equator, and officials cite fuel savings of about 30% on some launches.
  • Two Brazilians have reached space: Marcos Pontes in 2006 and Victor Hespanha in 2022.
  • The first commercial orbital attempt from Alcântara, by South Korea's Innospace in December 2025, failed after about 33 seconds.
  • The opportunities lie in launch services, small satellites and suppliers, not only in rockets.

FAQ

How many Brazilians have been to space?

Two: Marcos Pontes, who flew to the ISS in 2006, and Victor Hespanha, who flew a suborbital Blue Origin mission in 2022.

Why is Alcântara a good launch site?

Its position near the Equator lets rockets use more of Earth's rotational speed, saving fuel, especially for geostationary orbits.

Has a commercial rocket launched from Brazil?

Innospace's HANBIT-Nano attempted it in December 2025 but failed shortly after liftoff. A new attempt has been authorised.
