SpaceX in 2026: Starship Reaches Orbit, Falcon Never Stops

Starship finally reached orbit, Falcon 9 keeps a near-daily rhythm and Starlink passed 13 million users. What changed this year, in plain terms.

For most of the last decade, SpaceX has been two companies at once. One flies the Falcon 9 with airline-like regularity. The other builds Starship in South Texas, a fully reusable giant designed to change the cost of reaching space. In 2026 both stories moved forward, and since its June listing on Nasdaq the company reports its numbers in public, which makes the scoreboard easier to read.

Starship: from tests to orbit

After a difficult 2025, with three ships lost in the first half of the year before clean flights in August and October, SpaceX debuted the larger Starship V3 on Flight 12, on 22 May 2026. The ship completed its suborbital profile, but the Super Heavy booster was lost on its landing attempt. Flight 13, on 24 July, deployed the first V3 Starlink satellites and made the softest splashdown to date, though the booster again hit the water hard.

Flight 14, on 28 September, was the breakthrough. Ship 41 reached orbit at about 275 km, released 26 Starlink V3 satellites and splashed down in the Pacific. SpaceX brought it home early, after about three hours instead of the planned six orbits, but orbit was achieved.

  • 2025: five suborbital test flights, from Flight 7 in January to Flight 11 in October.
  • May 2026: Flight 12 debuts V3 from Starbase's second launch pad.
  • July 2026: Flight 13 deploys the first V3 Starlink satellites on a suborbital path.
  • September 2026: Flight 14 reaches orbit for the first time.
Falcon made spaceflight routine. Starship is trying to make it cheap.

Falcon 9: the quiet machine

Starship gets the headlines; Falcon 9 pays the bills. SpaceX flew 165 orbital missions in 2025, all on Falcon 9, beating its 2024 record of 134. The pace held in 2026, with the 85th Falcon 9 mission of the year flying in July. The same rocket carries NASA crews: Crew-12 lifted off on 13 February with astronauts from NASA, ESA and Roscosmos.

Starlink and what comes next

  • Starlink closed the third quarter of 2026 with 13.6 million subscribers, adding 1.6 million in three months, with coverage in 174 countries and markets.
  • Elon Musk has said the next flight could try to catch both stages with the launch tower; SpaceX has not confirmed a date.
  • NASA's Artemis plan depends on Starship: a docking test in Earth orbit in 2027, then crewed lunar landings targeted for 2028.
  • Still to prove: transferring propellant in orbit, which Starship has not yet demonstrated.

Key takeaways

  • Starship V3 reached orbit for the first time on Flight 14, on 28 September 2026.
  • Falcon 9 flew 165 orbital missions in 2025, a company record.
  • Starlink ended Q3 2026 with 13.6 million subscribers in 174 countries and markets.
  • Next to prove: tower catches, refuelling in orbit and the Artemis lunar lander.
