Bordeaux vs Burgundy: The Two Philosophies of Great French Wine

One blends grapes and builds châteaux. The other bottles a single grape and worships the plot. Know the difference and the wine list makes sense.

France's two most famous red-wine regions sit a few hundred kilometres apart and think in opposite directions. Bordeaux, on the Atlantic side, is a region of blends, large estates and brands. Burgundy, inland and further east, is a mosaic of tiny plots where a single grape is asked to express one patch of ground. Neither is better. They simply answer the question of what makes a great wine in two different ways. Understanding that split is the fastest way to read a French wine list, plan a cellar or pick the right bottle for a dinner that matters.

Bordeaux: the art of the blend

  • Reds are usually blends. On the Left Bank, in the Médoc and Graves, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to lead; on the Right Bank, in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, Merlot and Cabernet Franc dominate.
  • The estate is the star. A château blends grapes from its own vineyards and its name is the brand.
  • The 1855 classification ranked Médoc estates, plus Haut-Brion from Graves, into five growths. The first growths today are Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion and Mouton Rothschild, promoted in 1973.
  • Bordeaux also makes dry whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, and the sweet wines of Sauternes.
In Bordeaux you buy the château. In Burgundy you buy the hillside, and then the man who farmed it.
A château amid its vines and a walled clos: two ideas of greatness, a few hours apart.

Burgundy: the cult of the place

In Burgundy the red is Pinot Noir and the white is Chardonnay, almost always on their own. What changes is the site. Monks and growers mapped these slopes over centuries into named plots called climats, recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage in 2015. The hierarchy rises from regional wines to village wines, then Premier Cru and, at the top, Grand Cru, a tiny share of production. Ownership is fragmented, so one famous vineyard can be divided among many producers, and quality varies from name to name. Many producers also work as négociants, buying grapes or wine from growers, so two bottles from the same vineyard can taste remarkably different.

How to choose between them

  • Like structure, dark fruit, cedar and firm tannin? Start with Bordeaux, especially the Left Bank.
  • Prefer perfume, red fruit, silk and transparency? Start with red Burgundy.
  • In Bordeaux, check the château and the vintage. In Burgundy, check the producer first, then the vineyard.
  • Great value hides below the top tier: Bordeaux's lesser-known appellations, Burgundy's village wines from strong producers.
  • Both reward patience, so ask a sommelier which vintages are drinking well now, and enjoy them in moderation.

Key takeaways

  • Bordeaux is about blending and the estate; Burgundy is about one grape and the vineyard.
  • Left Bank leans on Cabernet Sauvignon; Right Bank on Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
  • Bordeaux classifies châteaux; Burgundy classifies the land itself.
  • In Burgundy the producer's name matters as much as the vineyard's.
