Erasmus+, Fulbright, Chevening, DAAD: How to Actually Apply

Four of the world's best-known study-abroad routes, what each one funds, and the calendar you must respect to stand a chance.

Study abroad is not only for 20-year-olds with a backpack. Government and foundation programmes fund master's degrees, research stays and exchanges for professionals, and some explicitly look for people with work experience. What separates winners from the rest is rarely talent. It is reading the rules early and working backwards from a deadline that does not move. For mid-career professionals, a scholarship can turn a sabbatical idea into a funded year abroad.

Four routes in one view

  • Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EU): one- to two-year master's degrees taught across several European universities. You need a bachelor's degree, you apply directly to the consortium running the programme, and the best-ranked applicants worldwide can receive full scholarships covering participation costs, travel, visa and a living allowance.
  • Chevening (UK): the British government's fully funded one-year master's. You need at least 2,800 hours of work experience, roughly two years, three eligible course choices, and you must return home for at least two years after the degree.
  • Fulbright (US): run country by country. In Brazil, the 2026 call offered 81 places, including doctoral sandwich stays of up to nine months, visiting-researcher grants and Portuguese teaching assistantships.
  • DAAD (Germany): the German Academic Exchange Service funds study and research for international graduates; programmes, deadlines and eligibility vary by country and discipline.
Scholarship committees are not choosing the smartest applicant. They are choosing the clearest one.
The deadline is fixed; everything else in the application is under your control.
The deadline is fixed; everything else in the application is under your control.

The calendar matters more than the essay

Most of these programmes run on a yearly cycle that closes many months before you would travel. Chevening's 2027/28 round opened on 4 August 2026 and closed on 6 October 2026. Erasmus Mundus programmes usually open in October and close in January for the following academic year. Fulbright Brasil's 2026 call closed on 2 August. If you are reading this in November, you are early for the next Chevening round and right on time for most Erasmus Mundus courses.

How to build a strong application

  • Choose the course first and the scholarship second: most awards require an admission or offer from the university.
  • Write one clear sentence on what you will do with the degree back home; Chevening and Fulbright both care about return and impact.
  • Book your language test early: results can take weeks.
  • Ask referees who can describe a specific result you delivered, not just your character.
  • Re-read the official rules for your country every year, because criteria change.
  • Check what the award does not cover, such as accompanying family, before you accept.
  • Keep a one-page tracker of each programme's deadline, documents and test dates.

Key takeaways

  • Erasmus Mundus: apply directly to each joint master's consortium; applications usually open in October and close in January.
  • Chevening: one-year UK master's, about two years of work experience and a two-year return home; the 2027/28 round closed on 6 October 2026.
  • Fulbright Brasil's 2026 call closed on 2 August: watch for the next cycle mid-year.
  • DAAD rules depend on your country and field: start with its scholarship database.

FAQ

Can I get Erasmus+ funding if I am not European?

Yes, through Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, which offer scholarships to top-ranked applicants worldwide. You apply to each programme's consortium directly.

Is Chevening only for recent graduates?

No. It requires a qualifying degree and at least 2,800 hours of work experience, about two years, so many applicants are working professionals.

When should I start preparing?

About a year before you want to travel: most cycles close many months before the course begins.
