Retro Gaming: Original Hardware, Sealed Games and Grading

Cartridges, CRTs and shrink-wrapped boxes. How to collect classic games with care, and what WATA and VGA grades really tell you.

Retro gaming has two kinds of fans. Players want the original feel: the right controller, the right screen, no input lag. Collectors want the object: a complete box, a clean manual, sometimes a factory seal that has never been broken. The best collections serve both, and they start with knowing exactly what you are buying.

Loose, boxed, sealed

  • Loose: the cartridge or disc alone. The most affordable way to play on original hardware.
  • Complete in box (CIB): game, box and manual, plus any inserts it originally shipped with.
  • New or sealed: still in its original factory packaging. Collectors pay for the seal, but the game can never be played without ending that status.
A sealed game is a time capsule. Open it and you own a game; keep it closed and you own a document.

What WATA and VGA grades mean

Grading companies authenticate games, assess their condition and seal them in clear cases. WATA, bought in 2021 by Collectors Universe, the parent of PSA, was rebranded as PSA in October 2025; its labels give the box a grade on a ten-point scale and, for sealed games, a separate letter grade for the seal, from A++ downwards. VGA, part of the Collectible Grading Authority in Duluth, Georgia, has graded games since 2008 on a 100-point scale, with Gold reserved for the top grades from 85+. CGC also grades video games. Read every element of the label: a superb box can hide a torn seal, and the reverse.

Preservation matters

Gaming history is fragile. A 2023 study by the Video Game History Foundation and the Software Preservation Network found that 87% of classic games released in the United States before 2010 are no longer commercially available. Original copies, and the hardware to run them, are part of how that history survives.

  • Store games and consoles cool, dry and out of sunlight, which fades labels and yellows some plastics.
  • Some cartridges keep saves on a small internal battery that eventually runs flat; a qualified technician can replace it.
  • Ageing consoles may need professional servicing of components such as capacitors; avoid amateur repairs on rare hardware.
  • Keep boxes in clear protectors and never stack heavy items on them.
  • Buy from sellers who show clear photos of labels, seals and box corners, and check grading certificates on the grader's official site.

Collect what you will still enjoy in twenty years, on a screen you love. Prices for graded games can swing sharply, so buy for the history and the pleasure, not for a return.

Key takeaways

  • Know the formats: loose, complete in box and sealed.
  • WATA, now part of PSA, grades the box and the seal separately; VGA uses a 100-point scale.
  • Most classic games are no longer sold commercially, so originals matter.
  • Store cool, dry and dark, and leave repairs on rare hardware to professionals.

FAQ

What is the difference between CIB and sealed?

CIB means complete in box, with manual and inserts, usually opened. Sealed means still in the original factory packaging.

What does a WATA seal grade mean?

It is a letter rating of the shrink-wrap's condition, from A++ downwards, given separately from the numeric box grade.

Should I open a sealed retro game?

That is your call, but opening it ends its sealed status and grade. Many collectors buy a second, loose copy to play.

List the consoles and games you are hunting on your Man Target wish list and buy the right copy, not the first one.
