Premium Action Figures: How Serious Collectors Choose
Hot Toys, Sideshow, Prime 1, Iron Studios, Tamashii Nations: scale, edition and provenance decide whether a piece is a centrepiece or a regret.

The premium figure is no longer an impulse from the toy aisle. Sixth-scale figures with tailored fabric costumes, polystone statues the size of a small child, die-cast robots engineered like watch movements: the top end of the hobby is built for adults with shelf space and patience. Before the first purchase, learn the three variables that matter most: who makes it, at what scale, and in which edition.
The houses that matter
- Hot Toys (Hong Kong, founded 2000). The reference for 1/6 scale articulated figures, above all its Movie Masterpiece Series of film characters.
- Sideshow (Thousand Oaks, California, founded 1994). Known for 1/4 scale Premium Format figures and half-scale Legendary Scale busts, and the main distributor of Hot Toys across the Americas, Europe and much of Asia.
- Prime 1 Studio (Tokyo, founded 2012). Large, museum-style statues, including the Museum Masterline range.
- Iron Studios (São Paulo, founded 2012). Brazil's statue maker, best known for its 1/10 Art Scale line under Marvel, DC, Disney and Star Wars licences.
- Tamashii Nations (Bandai Spirits, Japan). S.H.Figuarts articulated figures and die-cast lines such as METAL BUILD and Soul of Chogokin, strong in anime, tokusatsu and robots.
Buy the character you love in the scale your room can hold. Everything else is secondary.
Scale and editions, decoded
Scale is a ratio to the character's real size: 1/6 puts a human-sized hero at roughly 30 cm, 1/4 at about 45 cm and 1/3 at around 60 cm. Figures are articulated and can be posed; statues are fixed sculptures, usually in polystone or resin, and far heavier. Editions vary by maker. Many limited pieces are numbered, some ship with a certificate, and exclusive or bonus versions add an extra head, hand or accessory when bought through the maker's own store or selected retailers. Pre-orders are common and production can take many months, so expect delays.
Protect yourself on authenticity
- Buy from the brand's official store or an authorised retailer listed on its website.
- Be wary of listings far below the original retail price; counterfeits of popular figures exist.
- Keep the original box, inner trays, certificate and receipt. They prove provenance and protect resale.
- Compare paint, packaging print and accessories with official product photos before paying.
- On the secondary market, ask for photos of the edition number and certificate, and pay with buyer protection.
Build with intent
Pick a theme, one franchise, one maker or one scale, and buy fewer, better pieces. Five coherent statues read as a collection; twenty unrelated boxes read as storage. And collect for enjoyment, not as an investment: secondary-market values rise and fall with films, licences and fashion.
Key takeaways
- Know the maker, the scale and the edition before you buy.
- 1/6 is about 30 cm for a human-sized hero; 1/4 is about 45 cm.
- Buy from official stores or authorised retailers and keep every box and certificate.
- Collect for pleasure, not as an investment: values move with films and fashion.
FAQ
What is the difference between a figure and a statue?
A figure is articulated and can be posed, often with fabric clothing. A statue is a fixed sculpture, usually in polystone or resin.
How big is a 1/6 scale figure?
Around 30 cm for a human-sized character, since 1/6 of roughly 1.8 m is about 30 cm. Larger characters are taller.
How do I avoid counterfeit figures?
