Learning a Language After 35: Immersion, Institutes, Apps or Tutors?

Adults can learn languages well. What matters is hours, speaking and feedback. Here is how to combine the tools that deliver them.

Men often say they are too old to learn a language. Adults learn differently from children, not necessarily worse: they bring discipline, reading skills and a clear reason to learn. What they rarely have is time. A language is a budget of hours, and the smartest plan is the one that turns busy weeks into enough speaking practice. The good news is that the methods that work are simple and fit into a working week.

Budget the hours first

The US Foreign Service Institute, which trains American diplomats, publishes estimates for English speakers in full-time classes: about 24 to 30 weeks, or 600 to 750 class hours, for languages close to English such as Spanish, French, Portuguese or Italian, and about 88 weeks, or 2,200 hours, for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Diplomats study full-time with homework; at three hours a week, the same goal takes years. If your native language is close to the target, as Portuguese is to Spanish, expect fewer. Treat these figures as a planning range, not a promise.

Four tools, four jobs

  • Apps: good for daily vocabulary and habit, thanks to short sessions and spaced repetition. Weak on real conversation.
  • Tutors: one-to-one speaking with correction, the fastest way to fix what you actually get wrong. Book fixed weekly slots.
  • Institutes: structure and recognised exams. Alliance Française in Paris lets you start any Monday at 4, 9 or 20 hours a week; the Goethe-Institut runs three-week intensive courses at 25 lessons a week, from A1 to C2, in 12 German cities; the Instituto Cervantes awards DELE diplomas, which never expire.
  • Immersion: the multiplier. Middlebury's Language Schools in Vermont run 7- or 8-week summer programmes in 11 languages under the Language Pledge (no other language, in or out of class) and accept adults from 18 to over 80.
Apps teach you words. People teach you to speak. Immersion forces you to.
Two weeks of real conversation can move you further than months of tapping on a phone.
Two weeks of real conversation can move you further than months of tapping on a phone.

A plan for a busy executive

  • Set a level and a date on the CEFR scale (A1 to C2), for example B2 in 18 months.
  • Do 15 minutes of app work or flashcards every day.
  • Switch your phone and one news app to the target language, so a few minutes of reading happen without a decision.
  • Keep a running list of the phrases you needed and did not know, and bring it to every tutor session.
  • Book two tutor sessions a week and speak from the very first one.
  • Once a year, add an intensive week or more abroad, ideally alongside work travel.
  • Book the official exam six months ahead: a deadline turns intention into practice.

Key takeaways

  • Budget hours, not months: the US Foreign Service Institute estimates 600–750 class hours for Spanish or French and about 2,200 for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or Korean, for English speakers.
  • Apps build vocabulary and habit; tutors build speaking. You need both.
  • Immersion works because it multiplies hours: Middlebury's summer programmes run 7 or 8 weeks under a no-other-language pledge.
  • Certify your level with DELF/DALF, Goethe-Zertifikat or DELE; DELE diplomas never expire.

FAQ

Is it too late to learn a language at 40?

No. Adults learn differently, not necessarily worse. Plan for enough hours and regular speaking with feedback.

Apps or a tutor?

Both. Apps keep vocabulary moving daily; a tutor gives you speaking time and correction, which apps cannot replace.

How long does it take to learn Spanish or French?

The US Foreign Service Institute estimates 600 to 750 class hours for English speakers in intensive study; part-time learners need longer.
