Endurance racing has rarely looked this rich. The Hypercar class, introduced in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2021, opened the door to two kinds of car: bespoke Le Mans Hypercars (LMH) and LMDh prototypes built around a common spec chassis and hybrid system. A Balance of Performance keeps them close. The manufacturers came running, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans is again the race every carmaker wants to win. Power and weight are tightly regulated, so engineering, strategy and driving decide the result, not budget alone.

Le Mans 2026 in numbers

  • Eight Hypercar manufacturers: Aston Martin, Toyota, Cadillac, BMW, Genesis, Alpine, Ferrari and Peugeot.
  • Winner: the No. 7 Toyota TR010 Hybrid of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries, after 381 laps on 13 and 14 June.
  • Margin: 10.913 seconds over the No. 20 BMW M Team WRT of Robin Frijns, René Rast and Sheldon van der Linde, with the No. 8 Toyota third.
  • It ended Ferrari's run of three straight Le Mans wins with the 499P, in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The championship and what comes next

Toyota followed Le Mans with victory at Fuji and a one-two at Barcelona, which sealed the 2026 manufacturers' title. The drivers' championship goes to the Six Hours of Monza on 8 November as a straight fight between Toyota's two crews, with the No. 8 car of Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa 17 points ahead of the No. 7. Genesis made its debut this year, and McLaren has announced a Hypercar programme from 2027.

How to experience Le Mans

  • The race runs in June on the Circuit de la Sarthe. Book grandstands, camping or hospitality through the official organiser, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), and do it early.
  • Arrive for the build-up: practice, qualifying and the drivers' parade through the town are part of the ritual.
  • Stay up through the night. Brake discs glowing in the dark and the sunrise over the track are the soul of the race.
  • Pack for everything: ear protection, a rain layer, comfortable shoes and a battery pack.
  • If 24 hours feels like a big first step, a six-hour WEC round such as Fuji or Monza is a gentler introduction.
