Rhodes to Lemann: The Elite Scholarships and How They Choose
Five scholarships that fund a full degree at Oxford, Cambridge, Tsinghua, Stanford and beyond. Who qualifies, what they cover and what is still open.

A handful of scholarships do more than pay tuition. They put you in a cohort that will sit in boardrooms, ministries and laboratories for the next forty years. They are also narrower than their fame suggests. Most have age or graduation-date limits, most expect you to win a place at the university, and all of them read leadership and purpose as closely as grades. If you are past the window, this is the map to hand your son, your daughter or the brightest person on your team.
Five scholarships, side by side
- Rhodes (Oxford): two or more years of graduate study, with fees, a living stipend, visa costs and flights covered. Age limits vary by constituency, generally 18 to 24. More than 100 scholars a year from 24 constituencies; the Global Rhodes Scholarship is currently suspended.
- Gates Cambridge (Cambridge): about 80 full scholarships a year for non-UK citizens on full-time PhD, MPhil or one-year postgraduate courses, roughly two thirds of them for PhDs.
- Schwarzman Scholars (Tsinghua, Beijing): a fully funded ten-month master's in global affairs for applicants aged 18 to 28, covering tuition, travel and living costs.
- Knight-Hennessy Scholars (Stanford): up to three years of funding for any full-time Stanford graduate degree, including the MBA, for people who earned their first bachelor's degree recently (January 2020 or later in the current cycle).
- Lemann Fellowship (MIT and other partners): support for Brazilian graduate students committed to education, public policy or social impact in Brazil, awarded through selected departments.
These committees fund a trajectory, not a CV. They want to know how the world will look different because you were there.
What is still open today
As of November 2026, most of the 2027 cycle has closed. Rhodes applications ran from June to October 2026 in most constituencies, the Schwarzman global deadline was 9 September and Knight-Hennessy's was 6 October. Gates Cambridge's US round closed on 13 October, but its international round closes in December 2026 or January 2027, depending on the course. Lemann Fellowships follow your admission to a partner programme, so ask your department.
How to compete
- Start 12 to 18 months ahead: references, transcripts and the university application run in parallel.
- Apply to the degree you would take even without the money; committees spot a funding-first story.
- Show one sustained commitment, not ten scattered activities.
- Practise interviews with people who will challenge you, not reassure you.
- Check eligibility on the official site every year: age limits and dates move.
Key takeaways
- Most elite scholarships have age or graduation-date limits: plan them in your twenties, or for your children.
- Rhodes: generally ages 18 to 24, two or more years at Oxford; the Global Rhodes Scholarship is currently suspended.
- Gates Cambridge's international round closes in December 2026 or January 2027, depending on the course.
- Lemann Fellowships are awarded through partner departments: get admitted first, then ask.
