Comic Book Collecting: CGC Grades, Key Issues and Slabs
First appearances, label colours and a 10-point scale. How serious collectors read a comic before they buy it.

Comic collecting runs on two forces: story and condition. The story decides which issues matter: the first appearance of a hero, an origin, a famous cover. Condition decides what a given copy is worth. Since 2000, third-party grading has put a number on that condition, and the hobby has never been the same.
What makes a key issue
- First appearances: Superman in Action Comics #1 (1938), Batman in Detective Comics #27 (1939), Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962).
- Debuts of characters who later became stars, such as Wolverine's first full appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181 (1974).
- Origins, deaths, first issues of long-running titles and celebrated covers.
- Scarcity: low print runs and books that rarely survive in high grade.
Buy the book, not the label. Then make sure the label tells the truth about the book.
CGC, decoded
CGC, founded in 2000 in Sarasota, Florida, grades comics on a scale from 0.5 to 10. Graders assess spine stress, corners, colour, gloss, tears and signs of restoration, then seal the book in a clear, tamper-evident holder, the slab, with a label and certification number. Once a slab is opened, or cracked, the certification no longer applies. The label colour matters as much as the number.
- Blue, Universal: a standard book with no restoration detected.
- Yellow, Signature Series: signed by a notable creator, with the signature witnessed by CGC and certified authentic.
- Green, Qualified: a significant defect, or a signature that has not been authenticated.
- Purple, Restored: amateur or professional restoration, which usually weighs on value.
Buying and keeping comics
- Verify the certification number on CGC's website before paying.
- Compare copies at the same grade; page quality and eye appeal still vary.
- For raw, ungraded books, ask for detailed photos of the spine, corners and back cover.
- Store comics upright in acid-free boards and sleeves. The US Library of Congress recommends cool, stable conditions around 35% relative humidity, away from light, radiators and vents.
- Avoid attics and basements, and never use tape, rubber bands or paper clips.
Start with one character or one era you genuinely enjoy reading. Learn its key issues, follow completed sales rather than asking prices, and buy the best copy you can comfortably afford instead of several weak ones. Treat graded books as protected pieces of reading history, not as an investment: values move with films, fashion and new discoveries, and nobody can promise where they go next.
Key takeaways
- Story decides which issues matter; condition decides what a copy is worth.
- CGC grades from 0.5 to 10 and seals books in tamper-evident slabs.
- Label colour matters: blue, yellow, green and purple mean different things.
- Store cool, dry and stable in acid-free boards, away from light.

What is a key issue?
A comic of lasting importance, usually a character's first appearance, an origin, a major event or a famous cover.
