Play Better Doubles Without Hitting Harder
Use spacing, recovery and clear calls to make your partnership harder to pass.

Think as a Pair
Doubles is not two singles matches squeezed onto one court. Your position should relate to your partner, the ball and the opponents. When the ball moves wide, both players usually need to shift toward that side rather than leaving the middle unguarded.
Start with conventional positions you both understand: server near the baseline, partner closer to the net, and receivers positioned for their jobs. These are starting points, not parking spaces. Watch the opponent making contact and adjust together as the rally develops.
Make the Net Position Useful
At net, stand where you can threaten an interception without pretending you can cover everything. Too close to the net leaves you vulnerable to lobs; too far back makes low volleys more likely. Adjust to your mobility and the quality of the incoming ball.
Use a small split step as the opponent strikes, then move toward the volley. Keep the racket in front and choose a generous target. A controlled ball through the middle often creates confusion without requiring a spectacular angle or a full swing.
- Call yours or mine before committing to a shared ball.
- Shift together when an opponent is pulled wide.
- Discuss lob coverage before the first service game.
Agree Before the Ball Arrives
Discuss who takes a ball between you, but do not turn a preference into an absolute rule. Forehands, movement direction and who has the clearer play all matter. Call early and loudly enough to be heard. Silence followed by two late swings is not teamwork.
Decide how you will handle lobs, including when to switch sides. If your partner retreats to chase one, cover the newly open space rather than watching. Between points, share one useful observation, then reset. Calm communication keeps an ordinary mistake from becoming a whole game of hesitation.
Good doubles looks less like heroics and more like two people reading the same map.
Puntos clave
- Move sideways with your partner instead of guarding fixed spots.
- Recover toward the likely reply after each shot.
- Agree on middle-ball and lob calls before serving.
