Build a Serve Toss You Can Trust
A quieter tossing arm makes the most important shot feel less like a negotiation.

Start With the Release
Your serve begins before the racket moves. Stand in your normal serving position and hold the ball lightly in your fingertips. Let the tossing arm rise smoothly from the shoulder, with a relaxed wrist. Open the hand rather than snapping it upward.
Practice without hitting first. Watch whether the ball travels on a predictable path or spins away from you. A wandering toss often starts with a changing release, not a problem that needs fixing halfway through the swing. Keep the grip gentle enough that you are not squeezing the ball out.
Give the Ball a Window
For a basic overhead serve, look for a comfortable contact point above you and a little into the court. The exact location depends on your stance, reach and intended serve. Avoid forcing a universal position copied from a professional whose movement is different.
Choose a visible reference beyond the court and rehearse several tosses against it. Then add a slow shadow swing. You want a toss that allows you to extend naturally, not one that makes you lean sideways or arch your back to rescue contact.
- Rehearse five tosses before your first practice serve.
- Keep your eyes on the ball through the release.
- Reset whenever you must reach awkwardly to make contact.
Build the Whole Motion
Hit a short set of serves at comfortable speed, aiming well inside the service box. Judge the session by balanced contact and a repeatable rhythm rather than aces. If the toss feels wrong, let it fall or catch it and reset; do not swing just because it is airborne.
Film a few attempts from a safe position outside the playing area. Look for changes in arm path or release height. Work on one adjustment at a time. If serving causes shoulder or back pain, stop and seek qualified assessment rather than practicing through it.
A reliable toss gives your swing permission to stay simple.
À retenir
- Rehearse the toss without swinging before adding the racket.
- Release with an open hand rather than flicking your wrist.
- Catch an awkward toss instead of chasing it with your back.
