Ten Minutes for the Restless Mind
A straightforward practice that asks for attention, not belief.

Make the Setup Unremarkable
Choose an ordinary chair in an ordinary room. Put your phone out of reach and set a gentle timer for ten minutes. Sit in a position you can maintain without bracing yourself. Your eyes can stay open with a soft gaze. No incense, special clothing or spiritual commitment is required.
Take the first minute to notice where your body meets the chair and floor. Let your breathing happen without trying to make it impressive. If focusing on breath feels uncomfortable, use the sounds around you or the contact of your feet instead. The anchor is a place to return, not a test.
Practise the Return
For the next several minutes, notice one anchor: the movement of breathing, a steady background sound or pressure beneath your feet. Thoughts will arrive. Planning lunch is not evidence that you are bad at meditation. When you notice that attention has wandered, acknowledge it lightly and return.
You can quietly label the distraction as thinking, then let the label go too. Avoid grading each minute. The task is not to manufacture an empty mind or a particular mood. It is to notice what attention is doing and practise choosing where it goes next.
- Notice the anchor without changing it.
- Acknowledge distraction without an argument.
- Return gently, as often as necessary.
Finish Without a Verdict
Use the final minute to widen attention to the room. Notice light, sound and posture. When the timer ends, stand up slowly and move into one deliberate action: filling a glass, opening a notebook or stepping outside. You do not need a breakthrough to call the practice complete.
Meditation is optional, not a substitute for mental-health care. If the exercise increases distress, stop, orient yourself to your surroundings and consider a shorter or different activity. Seek guidance from a qualified professional if discomfort persists. Tomorrow, repeat only if the experiment feels useful enough to revisit.
À retenir
- Use a ten-minute timer with a gentle ending.
- Choose breath, sound or contact with the chair as an anchor.
- Treat each return of attention as the practice.
