Pack for a delayed return, not just the forecast at the trailhead.

Pack for the Unplanned Hour
A day hike can run late because of a wrong turn, an injury or slower progress than expected. Choose equipment for the route’s exposure, remoteness and forecast rather than treating a short distance as proof of low risk. The ten categories below are a starting framework, not a guarantee of completeness. Winter conditions, scrambling or remote travel may require specialist skills and additional equipment. Share your route, expected return and an agreed overdue response with a trusted person. Check access restrictions and current weather before setting out, not only the night before.
Give Every Item a Job
Navigation means a map you can interpret and an appropriate compass, with offline digital mapping as a useful addition. A charged phone is helpful but fragile; carry power where needed and do not assume coverage. Lighting should work without your phone. Your water plan must account for heat, effort and the reliability of sources; carry suitable treatment if replenishing. Food should include something beyond the planned lunch. Test unfamiliar equipment at home so an unexpected stop is not the first time you discover how your shelter opens or your filter works.
- Navigation tools.
- Headlamp with reliable backup power.
- Sun protection.
- Insulating layers.
- Waterproof protection.
- First-aid supplies and personal medication.
- Emergency shelter.
- Repair tools suited to your equipment.
- Extra food.
- Water and treatment appropriate to the route.
Adjust Before You Leave
Wear footwear that suits the surface and has already proved comfortable. Keep essential items accessible and protect insulation from water. Check batteries, replenishable supplies and medication rather than assuming last month’s pack remains ready. In hot conditions, start earlier or shorten the route; in cold conditions, consider what happens when you stop moving. Reassess the plan at the trailhead and turn back while the return is still straightforward. A well-packed bag supports judgment, but it does not compensate for an itinerary that exceeds your skills or the available daylight.
Pack for the pause you did not plan.
