Build Legs for the Last Run
A sensible pre-season routine prioritises control, balance and gradual loading.

Train the Movement, Not the Pose
Ski preparation is not a contest to hold the deepest wall sit. Build a base of controlled squats, hip hinges, step-ups and calf raises, using a range of motion you can manage comfortably. Begin with body weight or modest resistance and increase gradually as technique settles. If an old injury affects movement, seek individual advice from a qualified clinician or trainer. Strength work can support readiness, but it cannot guarantee injury prevention or substitute for skiing instruction. Give yourself several weeks rather than trying to manufacture readiness in a punishing weekend.
Teach Each Leg to Work
Single-leg exercises reveal differences that two-legged movements can hide. Try a supported split squat or a low step-down, keeping the movement slow and the knee tracking comfortably over the foot. Use a wall or rail when balance is the limiting factor. Add manageable aerobic sessions such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming to build tolerance for active days. Keep demanding workouts separated by recovery appropriate to your experience. Soreness is not a useful target; the aim is to return to the next session moving well.
- Use a stable surface for balance practice.
- Increase one training demand at a time.
- Treat sharp or persistent pain as a reason to stop and assess.
Save Capacity for the Mountain
Reduce training demands as travel approaches rather than arriving tired from a final heroic workout. On snow, warm up on easy terrain and take a lesson if your technique feels rusty. Have bindings and boots checked by a qualified ski technician; do not copy another skier’s settings. Cold, altitude and unfamiliar terrain can change how a day feels. Take breaks before fatigue makes turns unreliable and stop when control declines. A stronger body helps, but pacing, equipment and good judgment still decide whether the final run is a sensible idea.
Train for controlled turns, not impressive gym suffering.
À retenir
- Build strength progressively rather than cramming before departure.
- Include single-leg control and aerobic work.
- Keep the first ski days easier than your ambition.
