Being Present When Work Follows You Home
Presence is less a grand gesture than a series of small decisions that tell your children they have your attention.

Presence is a practice
A busy father does not need to pretend work is simple or that every evening can be cleared. He does need to make the time he has feel unmistakably shared. Children notice the difference between a parent in the room and a parent available to them. Presence is not measured in hours alone; it is attention given without one eye on the next notification.
Choose a repeatable point of contact: breakfast, the walk to school, bath time, or ten minutes before bed. Protect it where possible, and let your child help shape it. Ask a question that invites a story rather than a yes-or-no answer. Then listen long enough for the answer beneath the first answer. Ordinary rituals become reliable landmarks in a crowded week.
Set a boundary you can keep
A phone on the table keeps work in the conversation even when nobody is speaking. Put it in another room, silence non-urgent alerts, or agree on one brief check-in window. If a genuine deadline intrudes, explain what is happening in plain language and say when you will return. That small act of clarity is better than disappearing into a screen without explanation.
Being present does not mean turning every moment into a lesson or performance. Follow a game by your child’s rules. Help with a project without taking it over. When a child tells you something awkward, resist the urge to solve it immediately; curiosity can keep the door open. Your attention should make room for their interests, not merely the interests you hope to pass on.
Come back after a miss
Some days will go sideways. A meeting runs late; a planned outing is cancelled; patience wears thin. Acknowledge the miss without making a child responsible for comforting you. Offer a realistic next time and keep it. Over years, children learn that adults can be imperfect and still dependable. The aim is not a flawless record. It is a pattern of returning, noticing and making time again.
Das Wichtigste
- Protect a small daily ritual.
- Put the phone out of reach.
- Repair missed moments without drama.
