Build a Base Before Chasing a Half Marathon

Make regular, comfortable running the foundation of your first longer race.

Begin With Your Current Week

Start from the running you can do comfortably now, not the schedule you wish you could handle. If you are new or returning after a long break, alternating easy running and walking is a legitimate foundation. Establish a repeatable routine before making the longest outing substantially longer.

Choose a race far enough away that preparation does not require rushing. There is no universal weekly increase that guarantees safety. Your history, sleep, other sport and response to training all matter. Seek medical clearance before starting if you have relevant conditions or concerning symptoms.

Make Most Runs Comfortable

Keep the bulk of your early running conversational. You should be able to speak in sentences rather than negotiating every word between breaths. Slow down on hills and in heat; pace is an outcome of conditions as well as fitness. Walking sections can help you keep effort manageable.

Separate longer outings with easier days or rest. Add distance gradually when your current workload feels settled, and repeat a week when it does not. A calendar is a planning tool, not a command to progress while your body is asking for recovery.

  • Schedule recovery alongside your runs, not after exhaustion.
  • Judge easy effort by conversation rather than a fixed pace.
  • Test race-day clothing and fueling before the event.

Rehearse the Ordinary Details

Use longer easy outings to test shoes, socks, fluids and food you might use on race day. Longer efforts may require carbohydrate and hydration planning; individual tolerance and conditions matter. Practice with familiar options rather than treating the event as your first experiment.

Keep a simple log of duration, effort and how you feel afterward. Persistent pain, altered gait or fatigue that does not settle deserves attention, not motivational slogans. Stop for chest pain, faintness or unusual breathlessness and seek medical advice urgently when appropriate. The strongest first-race plan is one you can arrive healthy enough to enjoy.

The base is built by the weeks you can repeat, not the run you barely survive.

À retenir

  • Build repeatable easy weeks before extending the long run.
  • Use run-walk intervals if continuous running feels too hard.
  • Repeat or reduce training when fatigue stops resolving.
