Give Reading an Address
A vague intention to read more has to compete with everything else in the day. Give the habit a specific place: the chair after breakfast, the train seat or the bedside table before you reach for your phone. Keep the book there and make the first session small enough to fit a normal day. A few attentive pages count. You are building a route back into the book, not proving how quickly you can finish it. Choose a cue you actually encounter rather than designing a routine for an imaginary schedule.
- Place the current book at the point of your chosen daily cue.
- Set a minimum small enough to manage on a busy day.
- Leave one sentence marking where a difficult argument has reached.
Lower the Friction, Not the Ambition
Keep one main book within easy reach and a short list of what might follow. If reading on a device, reduce the interruptions you can control. Print, digital and audio formats can serve different situations; choose the one that lets you engage with the work safely and comfortably. Do not read a screen while walking through traffic or driving. For difficult books, stop at a useful break and leave a brief note about where the argument has reached. Re-entry becomes easier when yesterday’s attention has left a small signpost.
Read for the life the pages open, not the total they produce.
Measure What You Want to Keep
A yearly count can encourage you, but it can also push you toward books chosen mainly for speed. Ask what you remember, what changed your mind and what you want to discuss. Abandoning a book thoughtfully is different from abandoning the habit. If a title repeatedly stalls you, decide whether the timing is wrong or the interest simply is not there. Keep a light record of finished books and one sentence about each. The point is a larger reading life, not a number that makes it feel like another job.
Puntos clave
- Attach reading to an existing daily cue.
- Keep one main book accessible where you naturally pause.
- Choose a small page or time commitment you can repeat.
