Provenance Before You Pay

Separate Two Different Questions
Provenance concerns an object’s history, including documented ownership where available. Authentication concerns whether the object is what it is claimed to be. They can inform each other, but one is not a substitute for the other. An attractive ownership story does not establish authorship, and an expert attribution does not necessarily settle legal title. Ask the seller to identify what is documented, what is inferred and what remains unknown. A gap is not automatic proof of a problem, but it is a reason to understand the limits of the claim.
- Match identifying details on the paperwork to the actual object.
- Ask who made each attribution and on what basis.
- Confirm legal requirements and written return terms before paying.
Read the Document, Not the Heading
A certificate is only as useful as its issuer, evidence and actual wording. Identify who issued it, what expertise they have and whether it describes this exact object. Check dates, measurements, photographs, signatures and identifying marks against the item offered. Do not assume a famous-looking letterhead proves anything. For a significant purchase, consider independent specialist advice and verify records through appropriate sources. Ask about condition and restoration as well as origin. A genuine object can still be unsuitable for you if its description hides expensive damage or extensive alteration.
Paperwork should clarify uncertainty, not decorate it.
Make Walking Away Easy
Request an invoice with the seller’s details and the substantive description, along with written return terms and any relevant guarantees. Keep payment and correspondence records. For cultural objects, wildlife materials or cross-border purchases, check applicable legal and import requirements with qualified sources; the rules depend on the object and jurisdictions involved. Avoid rushed decisions framed around a secret opportunity or an urgent deadline. No document makes every purchase risk-free. A good process makes uncertainty visible early enough for you to decide whether the object, seller and price still make sense.
