Bring Your Tennis Skills, Not Every Habit
Keep the court sense and lose the oversized swing when switching sports.

Learn the Different Opening
Tennis gives you useful tracking, balance and racket-sport instincts. Pickleball asks you to reorganize them. The serve must bounce before the return, and the return must bounce before the serving team hits its next shot. Only then can either side volley, subject to the non-volley-zone rules.
That opening changes positioning. Charging forward immediately after serving can leave the required bounce behind you. Start where you can handle a deep return, then move forward when your shot creates time. Check your local format and current rules before assuming familiar tennis habits apply.
Shrink the Swing
A large backswing can become a liability when the next ball arrives quickly. Keep the paddle in front, use a compact preparation and let your feet handle the spacing. You still need control of the paddle face; simply poking at the ball is not a complete technique.
Practice controlled exchanges before trying to accelerate. On blocks, soften your grip enough to avoid sending every hard ball back harder. On dinks, work with a small swing and a comfortable margin above the net. Adjust through feedback rather than trying to transplant tennis contact unchanged.
- Wait for the return bounce before the serving side attacks.
- Practice blocks with little or no backswing.
- Pause your advance to get balanced for the next reply.
Earn Your Place at the Line
A deep return can give you time to advance, but depth alone does not guarantee a safe arrival. Move under control and get balanced as your opponent strikes. If you are caught moving, stop for the reply rather than running through contact and losing control.
Practice the third shot with both a controlled drop and a drive, understanding that neither is mandatory in every situation. Watch the opponents’ positions and your own contact height. Play cooperative games with a patient partner, and treat unfamiliar situations as opportunities to learn the sport rather than defend your tennis credentials.
Your tennis background is an advantage when it stays curious.
À retenir
- Respect the two-bounce rule before moving forward.
- Shorten your backswing for quick exchanges.
- Use the return to create time to approach under control.
