Know What the Line Means
The kitchen is the non-volley zone beside the net. You cannot volley while standing in it or touching its boundary line. You also commit a fault if your momentum from a volley carries you into the zone, even after the ball is dead. Balance is part of the shot, not an optional finish.
You may enter the zone to play a ball that has bounced, and you may remain there. Before volleying again, however, establish both feet outside it. Check the current rules used by your club or competition for formal play.
Make the Soft Ball Useful
A dink is a controlled shot that lands in the opponent’s non-volley zone. Its purpose is not simply to be gentle. A low, well-placed ball can make an aggressive reply more difficult while giving you time to stay balanced near the line.
Use a compact motion and a relaxed grip. Aim with enough net clearance to avoid turning every exchange into a test of perfection. Start with cooperative rallies straight ahead, then explore crosscourt space. Your first goal is repeatability, not clipping the sideline or producing a dramatic winner.
- Practice a bounced-ball entry and a balanced exit.
- Use compact swings during cooperative dink rallies.
- Reset your feet outside the zone before the next volley.
Move Without Reaching
Keep your feet active and take small adjustment steps instead of stretching from a fixed stance. Recover your paddle in front of you after contact. If a ball pulls you into the kitchen, play the bounce, then recover when the rally gives you time to do so safely.
Do not attack every ball merely because you are close to the net. A low contact often calls for patience; a ball comfortably above net height may offer more options. Learn that distinction through controlled practice, and leave generous space between neighboring groups while retrieving stray balls.
The kitchen rewards the player who can stay patient without becoming passive.
