Remove What Does Not Belong

Before making a photograph, decide what the viewer should notice first. Then inspect the edges for bright distractions, half-visible objects or a pole apparently growing from someone’s head. A small sideways step can simplify a crowded background more effectively than a filter afterward. The rule of thirds can provide a starting point, but a central subject may be exactly right. Composition is not obedience to a grid. It is the deliberate arrangement of what stays in the picture and what you choose to leave outside it.

  • Wipe the lens with a suitable clean cloth before shooting.
  • Check all four frame edges for accidental distractions.
  • Make a second version from a different height or position.

Change Position Before Settings

Take the same scene from standing height, a lower angle and one step to the side. Watch how foreground and background overlap differently. Moving closer can make a subject more prominent, but very close wide-angle portraits can alter facial proportions; stepping back may look more natural. Use your phone’s available lenses thoughtfully and check the result rather than assuming every zoom level performs identically. Stay aware of roads, edges and private property. No composition improvement justifies creating danger or treating someone else’s space as your studio without permission.

Choose Light You Can Use

For an easy portrait, try open shade or a position beside a window, then turn the subject slightly to compare the effect. Tap to focus where it matters and adjust brightness if the face or sky looks wrong. Clean the lens before blaming the camera for haze. Make a few deliberate frames rather than a long burst of near-identical images, and review them for expression as well as sharpness. Ask permission when photographing people, especially if you plan to publish. A considerate approach belongs inside good technique.
