Negotiate Your Next Raise With a Clear Case
A credible compensation conversation starts with evidence, timing and a clear understanding of what you are asking for.

Build the case before the meeting
A raise conversation is stronger when it is grounded in the work you have done and the scope you now carry. Keep a record of projects, responsibilities, outcomes and positive feedback as they occur. Separate what you controlled from broader team results, and describe your contribution accurately. This makes the discussion concrete without turning it into a boast or a vague appeal for recognition.
Research compensation ranges for comparable roles, location, seniority and industry using more than one reliable source. Treat public figures as directional, not as a guaranteed market rate. Consider your organization’s review calendar and how budgets are set. If you do not know the process, ask a manager or human-resources contact how compensation decisions are made. Preparation includes understanding constraints as well as your preferred outcome.
Make a direct request
Ask for a private meeting and signal that you want to discuss compensation and the scope of your role. In the conversation, state the range or figure you are seeking and explain the evidence behind it. Then pause. A concise request gives the other person something clear to respond to. Avoid bluffing about competing offers or inventing deadlines; credibility is hard to rebuild once spent.
The response may be yes, no, or a request for more information. Ask what factors are shaping the decision and what would need to change if the request cannot be met now. Clarify whether the issue is performance, role level, timing or budget. If a review date or set of milestones is proposed, write it down and agree on how progress will be assessed.
Close with next steps
After the meeting, send a brief note summarizing the discussion, agreed actions and timing. If the answer is negative, you can still learn whether a role change, development plan or non-salary benefit is realistic. Do not treat every benefit as equivalent to cash; compare the full package and your priorities. The aim is a professional conversation that leaves both sides clear about what happens next.
