The Modern Classics Worth Buying Now
The best modern classics combine usable performance, honest character and ownership costs that still make sense.

A modern classic is not simply an old car with a rising asking price. It is a machine from the recent past whose design, feel or engineering still offers something distinct, without making every outing an expedition. Think late-1990s and 2000s sports cars, analog grand tourers and unusually characterful daily drivers. The right example rewards use, not just a place in a garage.
Start with the car, not the forecast
Choose a model you genuinely want to drive. A naturally aspirated engine, tactile manual gearbox or compact proportions may matter more than a collector ranking. Popular Japanese sports coupes and carefully maintained European roadsters remain compelling, but prices vary sharply by market, specification and condition. Treat asking prices as conversation starters, not proof of value or a promise of appreciation.
Paperwork can be more exciting than paint. Look for consistent service records, sensible repairs and a clear account of modifications. Have an independent specialist inspect the car on a lift and scan its systems. Rust, accident repairs, tired suspension and neglected cooling systems can turn an apparently affordable purchase into an expensive project. A pre-purchase inspection is leverage, not fussiness.
Price the ownership, too
Set aside money after purchase for baseline servicing, age-related rubber parts, tires and surprise repairs. Insurance, storage and specialist labor vary between cars and locations. Parts availability matters: a rare trim piece is irritating, while a scarce control module can keep a car idle. Ask owner clubs or independent shops what typically fails before negotiating.
A sensible shortlist balances emotional appeal with a support network. Common, well-documented models are often easier to maintain than rarer variants. Drive more than one example; age, setup and repairs create noticeable differences. Pay a fair, locally informed price for the best car you can verify, and walk away when the seller’s story outruns the evidence.
The reward is not a spreadsheet victory. It is the easy Saturday morning start, satisfying controls and feeling that you bought a machine for its qualities rather than a prediction. Keep it maintained, use it regularly and insure it appropriately. If values rise, that is a welcome side effect; if they do not, you still own the car you wanted.
Ownership is also a question of fit. Consider how often you will drive, where the vehicle will live and who can maintain it. A satisfying choice is one that works in ordinary conditions, not only in the imagined perfect weekend. Verify claims independently, compare like with like and keep a repair reserve separate from the purchase budget.
A useful next step is to choose one detail from this guide and put it into practice this week. Keep expectations realistic, note what works and adjust without turning a single attempt into a verdict. The strongest approach is informed, patient and fitted to your own circumstances.
