When Being Tired Becomes Something More
Notice the pattern, lower the load and get support before endurance becomes your only strategy.

Look Beyond a Difficult Week
A packed week can leave anyone depleted. More concerning is a pattern that does not ease: persistent exhaustion, growing distance or cynicism toward work, and feeling less effective. Burnout is described by the WHO as an occupational phenomenon, not a medical diagnosis. The label should not substitute for understanding what is happening.
Sleep problems, irritability and trouble concentrating can overlap with depression, anxiety and physical health conditions. Do not diagnose yourself from a checklist. Notice when symptoms started, whether they are mainly work-related and how they affect relationships or basic routines. Those observations can help a qualified professional assess the wider picture.
Change the Load, Not Just the Evening
A walk or a quiet night may help you recover, but it cannot resolve an impossible workload on its own. Identify one pressure that can actually change: competing deadlines, constant availability or unclear responsibility. Ask for a specific adjustment and agree when you will review whether it helped.
If your manager is not a safe person to approach, consider occupational health, a trusted representative or another appropriate support route. Keep the request concrete. You do not have to share private medical details with everyone to explain that current demands are not sustainable.
- Ask which task should take priority when deadlines conflict.
- Agree on a realistic boundary for after-hours contact.
- Protect time for food, rest and supportive contact.
Let Support Be Part of the Plan
Talk to a qualified health professional if symptoms persist, worsen or interfere with daily life. You do not need to wait until you cannot work. A clinician can consider other causes and discuss treatment or support where appropriate. Tell someone you trust what is happening rather than managing it entirely alone.
This article is educational and cannot diagnose burnout or another condition. If you are in crisis or feel at risk of harming yourself, call local emergency services or a crisis helpline, such as CVV 188 in Brazil or 988 in the US. Immediate safety comes before any productivity plan.
Recovery needs a change in demand, not another test of endurance.
Key takeaways
- Track whether exhaustion and detachment cluster around work.
- Ask for a concrete workload change rather than promising more resilience.
- Seek professional assessment for persistent or worsening symptoms.
