Stop Trying to Be Good at Meditation
Drop the performance rules that turn a quiet practice into another contest.

Myth One: Your Mind Must Be Blank
A busy mind does not disqualify you from meditation. In many attention practices, thoughts are expected. You notice that attention has drifted, then return to an anchor such as sound or breath. That return is part of the exercise, not a repair after doing it wrong.
Trying to force silence can turn the session into a running argument with yourself. Instead, use a plain observation: planning, remembering, worrying. Then return without demanding that the thought disappear. You are practising a response to distraction, not proving that you can prevent mental activity altogether.
Myth Two: It Must Look a Certain Way
A cushion is not a qualification. You can sit on a chair, keep your eyes open or try a gentle walking practice in a safe space. Choose a position that supports comfort and attention. Pain is not evidence of commitment, and stillness does not need to become an endurance event.
Length is also a choice rather than a badge. A brief, manageable practice can help you learn what suits you. Start with a few minutes and leave room to adjust. Consistency need not mean protecting an elaborate routine against every demand of real life.
- Use a chair if floor sitting is uncomfortable.
- Keep your eyes open if that feels steadier.
- Choose a duration you can approach without dread.
Myth Three: Calm Is the Only Result
Sometimes sitting quietly makes you more aware of agitation. That does not mean you must push through it. Meditation is not universally soothing, and it is not a replacement for treatment. Stop if a practice feels destabilising; looking around the room or moving may be more appropriate in that moment.
If you have ongoing mental-health concerns, seek advice from a qualified professional about suitable support. Treat meditation as one optional activity among many, not a moral obligation. A walk, a conversation or professional care can matter more than keeping a streak. The useful question is whether this practice serves your life.
Das Wichtigste
- Replace the empty-mind goal with noticing and returning.
- Choose a comfortable posture rather than a dramatic one.
- Stop or adapt a practice that increases distress.
