Your First Wave Can Wait
Start surfing with better judgment, not a younger person’s timetable.

Choose the Beach Before the Board
Learning to surf as an adult starts with choosing a forgiving classroom. Book a qualified local instructor and explain your swimming confidence, injuries and experience honestly. Ask for a lifeguarded beach with gentle, broken waves and a suitable forecast. A long, stable soft-top usually makes more sense than a sleek shortboard. Let the instructor choose the equipment and explain the local hazards. If you cannot swim comfortably in open water, build that skill first; a surfboard and leash are not substitutes for swimming ability.
Make Small Movements Count
On dry sand, rehearse moving from a prone position into a balanced stance. Aim for quiet feet and bent knees, not a dramatic leap. In the water, follow the instructor’s directions on spacing, board handling and where to fall. Protect your head when you surface and never dive headfirst into shallow water. Work on one task per attempt: paddling straight, finding the take-off moment, then standing. A short ride in broken water is useful practice, not a lesser version of surfing.
- Use sun protection appropriate to the conditions.
- Wear a correctly fitted wetsuit when water temperature requires it.
- Ask where to enter, practise and leave the water.
Leave Something in Reserve
Check the forecast, tides and beach flags before every session, even when yesterday felt easy. Learn how to identify local currents with an instructor or lifeguard; never assume a calm-looking channel is safe. Stay inside the agreed practice area and stop when fatigue makes board control unreliable. Cold, wind and repeated paddling can make the return harder than expected. Afterwards, note one thing that improved and one question for your next lesson. Progress is returning with enough confidence and energy to practise again, rather than collecting the biggest wave you can survive.
The first skill is choosing a session you can handle.
Das Wichtigste
- Book a qualified instructor at a lifeguarded beginner beach.
- Practise the pop-up on land before entering the water.
- Finish while you still have energy for a safe return.
