How to Choose a Suit That Fits Your Life

The right suit starts with occasion and proportion, then earns its place through fit, fabric and sensible alterations.

Define the assignment

Before looking at cloth, ask where and how often the suit will be worn. A conservative office, a summer wedding and an occasional formal event call for different choices. Navy and charcoal are versatile starting points for many wardrobes, but the dress code and your existing clothes matter. Set a budget that includes alterations; a suit that needs sensible tailoring can still be the better purchase.

The jacket shoulders are difficult to alter substantially, so start there. The seam should sit near your natural shoulder edge without collapsing or extending sharply beyond it. Button the jacket and check that it closes without pulling into an X, while allowing comfortable movement. A clean line matters more than a tight silhouette. Stand naturally, sit down and reach forward during the fitting.

Assess jacket and trousers

Sleeves should show a considered amount of shirt cuff, and the jacket length should feel balanced with your height and proportions. Lapel width is a matter of taste, but extreme proportions can date quickly. Trousers should sit securely at the waist and fall cleanly over your shoes; the break is personal and can be adjusted. Avoid choosing a size that depends on dramatic tailoring to become wearable.

Wool is a versatile option, with weight and weave affecting warmth, drape and seasonality. Linen and cotton can suit warmer settings but crease differently. Check the care label and ask about pressing and cleaning before buying. A fabric that looks refined under shop lights may behave differently in daylight. Try the suit with a shirt and shoes similar to those you expect to wear.

Use alterations thoughtfully

A tailor can usually refine sleeve length, trouser hem and some aspects of waist suppression, depending on construction. Ask what is practical before purchasing and get the cost in writing if the work is substantial. Keep the first fitting comfortable, not aspirational. A suit should let you move through a full day. The best fit is polished without making you think about your clothes every minute.
