Your First Therapy Session, Decoded
A practical guide to arriving with questions rather than a perfect explanation.

Arrive As You Are
You do not need a polished life story for a first therapy appointment. A few notes can be enough: what has been difficult, what brought you here now, and what you hope might change. If speaking feels awkward, you can say that. Uncertainty is useful information, not a failed introduction.
Therapists commonly ask about current concerns, relevant history and sources of support. Depending on the setting, they may also ask about health, medication and safety. You can ask why a question matters and discuss the pace of disclosure. An initial assessment may take more than one session.
Make the Practical Things Explicit
Before sharing sensitive details, ask how confidentiality works and what its limits are. Those limits depend on local law and professional obligations. For online work, discuss privacy, where you will both be located and what happens if the connection fails. Clear boundaries make the relationship easier to understand.
Use the appointment to learn how this therapist works. You are not interviewing for permission to receive care. You are establishing whether the service, the person and the arrangements could meet your needs.
- What are the fees, cancellation rules and contact boundaries?
- How do you handle confidentiality and records?
- When would we review whether this is helping?
Notice the Experience Afterwards
Afterwards, give yourself a little space before judging the entire process. A first session can feel relieving, uncomfortable, ordinary or unfinished. Ask whether you felt listened to, whether explanations made sense and whether you could raise a disagreement. Immediate comfort is not the only measure, but respect matters.
If the fit seems wrong, discuss it or seek another qualified professional. This guide is educational and cannot assess your needs. Seek professional support for ongoing distress; if you feel unable to stay safe, contact local emergency or crisis services rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
Puntos clave
- Write down what prompted you to seek help.
- Ask about confidentiality and cancellation policies.
- Review whether you felt heard after the appointment.
