Screen Rules That Survive Real Life

Build a family agreement around routines, not daily arguments.

Define What You Are Protecting

Before setting a limit, name the need behind it. Are screens crowding out sleep, homework, movement or time together? Different problems need different rules. A device-free meal addresses connection; keeping devices outside the bedroom can support a bedtime routine. A single daily number cannot describe every kind of screen use.

Consider your child’s age, development, accessibility needs and how technology fits school and friendships. Ask what they enjoy and what feels difficult online. Listening does not mean handing over the decision. It gives you information for a rule you can explain without turning every conversation into a prosecution.

Make the Agreement Visible

Choose a few rules that everyone can recognise in practice. State when devices are available, where they rest overnight and how transitions happen. Give a warning before stopping when possible. A predictable handover is easier to understand than a sudden demand made only when an adult becomes frustrated.

Adults belong in the agreement too. If work requires an exception, explain it briefly rather than claiming your own scrolling never counts. Decide in advance how travel, illness and special events will differ from ordinary days. Flexibility is clearer when it has a name.

  • Agree on a device parking place.
  • Choose a consistent signal before switching off.
  • Set a time to review what is working.

Respond to the Actual Problem

If the rule keeps failing, examine the setup before escalating punishment. Is the stopping point awkward? Is an alternative activity available? Does the child need help managing group messages or upsetting content? Discuss privacy, unwanted contact and how to ask for help without assuming disclosure will automatically mean losing access.

No household system removes every conflict. Repair your own overreactions and revise rules as children grow. For persistent sleep, behavioural or mental-health concerns, consult a paediatric clinician or qualified professional. Seek age-appropriate guidance from reputable health and child-safety sources rather than treating one family’s routine as a universal prescription.

À retenir

  • Choose a small number of observable screen rules.
  • Include adult behaviour and explain necessary exceptions.
  • Review content, contact and sleep, not just minutes.
