Write the Letter Only You Can Leave

An ethical will shares values and memories without pretending to direct an estate.

Speak to Someone, Not to History

An ethical will is a personal expression of values, memories and hopes. Unlike a legal will, it generally does not distribute property or replace estate documents. Think of it as a letter your children, friends or other loved ones can read to hear something of your voice.

Begin with a named reader. What would you want that person to know if you could not explain it later? You do not need a complete autobiography. One true scene, described with care, can carry more meaning than a polished account of every milestone. Use language you would actually say aloud.

Let Values Have a Story

Rather than announcing that kindness matters, describe a moment when someone’s kindness changed your day. Include uncertainty and lessons you learned slowly. A letter that presents you as flawless leaves less room for the reader to be human. You can acknowledge regret without demanding forgiveness or assigning someone else a duty to heal it.

Avoid turning hopes into instructions for another person’s life. Children do not need to inherit your unfinished ambitions. Offer what guided you, explain what you would do differently and make clear that they will make their own choices.

  • Describe one memory you do not want lost.
  • Explain one value through an action.
  • Offer one hope without making it a condition.

Make It Findable and Keep It Separate

Date the letter and tell a trusted person where it is stored. Consider whether a named individual should receive it privately rather than placing sensitive material in a shared family folder. Read it again later for unnecessary pressure, private information about others or language that could be mistaken for a legal direction.

This is educational information, not legal advice. Rules and the legal significance of written wishes vary. Consult a locally licensed lawyer about wills, estate documents and how to keep this letter distinct. The purpose is a human connection, not an improvised shortcut around the documents your circumstances require.

À retenir

  • Address the letter to specific people rather than posterity.
  • Pair each value with an honest memory.
  • Keep personal wishes separate from legally effective documents.
