Cigar Etiquette for the First-Time Smoker
A little preparation makes a first cigar more relaxed, more considerate and far less likely to become an endurance exercise.

Prepare simply
A first cigar is best approached as a slow social ritual, not a test of toughness. Choose a comfortable setting where smoking is permitted, allow more time than you think you need and be prepared to stop when you have had enough. Cigars contain tobacco and nicotine, with real health risks; they are not risk-free alternatives to other tobacco products. If you do not use tobacco, the healthiest choice is not to start. For those who do choose to smoke, etiquette begins with consideration.
Pick a mild-to-medium, shorter-format cigar from a reputable tobacconist, and ask for help matching size and strength to your experience. A large cigar can take a long time and deliver more tobacco than a beginner expects. Do not judge quality by ring gauge or price alone. Keep the cigar properly stored until use; dry tobacco can burn hot and unevenly, while overly damp tobacco can be difficult to keep lit.
Pace the experience
Cut only the closed cap, using a sharp cutter if available. The goal is a clean opening, not removing a large section of the head. Toast the foot gently with a butane lighter or wooden match, turning the cigar so the edge warms evenly before drawing. Avoid gasoline lighters, which can add unwanted odor. Take slow, occasional puffs rather than inhaling. Cigar smoke is generally held in the mouth for flavor, but it still exposes the body and those nearby to harmful substances.
Pacing matters. A cigar that is puffed rapidly can become hot, harsh and unpleasant. Let it rest between draws and set it down without crushing it. Ash may remain attached for a while; tap it gently when it grows long enough to risk falling. There is no need to keep a perfect column of ash as proof of technique. If the cigar goes out, relight carefully after removing loose ash, or simply let it finish.
The best first cigar is one you can enjoy at your own pace.
Respect the room
Be attentive to the room. Smoke only where it is allowed, check the preferences of everyone present and avoid lighting up near children, non-smokers or enclosed shared spaces. Never assume a patio, balcony or outdoor table is automatically welcome. In a cigar lounge, follow its house rules and use the designated ashtray. Do not wave a lit cigar while talking, and keep it away from fabrics and other guests’ belongings.
Finish when the taste turns unpleasant or you have had enough; a cigar is not meant to be smoked to the nub. Let it go out naturally in the ashtray rather than grinding it into a mess. Wash your hands and consider that the aroma clings to clothing. Good etiquette is simple: make the experience pleasant for yourself without making it someone else’s problem. If nicotine causes dizziness or nausea, stop, get fresh air and seek medical help if symptoms are severe.
