Decide Whether to Fish at All
Catch-and-release is not automatically harmless. Survival depends on the species, hooking location, handling and environmental conditions. Check licences, seasons, local regulations and current advisories before fishing; some waters require particular hooks or prohibit targeting certain fish. Warm water and low oxygen can make fishing especially stressful for sensitive species. Follow local closures and species-specific guidance rather than relying on a universal temperature rule. Sometimes the responsible choice is to change location, target a different permitted species or put the rod away before making the first cast.
Prepare for a Short Encounter
Use tackle suited to the fish so you can land it without unnecessarily prolonging the fight. Have an appropriate knotless or fish-friendly net, suitable unhooking tools and a clear release plan within reach. Where permitted and appropriate, barbless hooks can make removal simpler, but they do not eliminate injury. Wet your hands before touching a fish, avoid its gills and eyes, and support its body without squeezing. Keep it in the water whenever possible. Never place a fish on dry rocks, sand or grass while searching for your phone.
- Choose a safe landing spot before casting.
- Keep handling tools accessible rather than buried in a pack.
- Leave the camera unused when fish welfare requires it.
Make the Photograph Optional
If a photograph is lawful and appropriate, prepare the camera first and keep any necessary air exposure as brief as possible. Better still, photograph the fish in the water. For deeply hooked fish, follow species-specific advice; forcing out a hook can cause further damage. Support a recovering fish gently in suitable water, facing into a gentle current where relevant, without dragging it backwards and forwards. Release when it can maintain balance and swim under its own power. Follow legal retention or reporting requirements if a fish cannot be released; never improvise around protected-species rules.
The photograph is optional; careful handling is not.
Das Wichtigste
- Follow species-specific rules and local licence conditions.
- Keep fish in the water whenever possible.
- Do not fish for sensitive species during harmful water conditions.
