Make Your First Month a Technical One

Build the habits that let an adult beginner train again next week.

Arrive Ready to Learn

Tell your coach you are new, even if you have trained in another sport. General fitness does not automatically transfer to falling, defending strikes or recognising a joint lock. Mention relevant injuries and ask which exercises need modification. Remove jewellery, trim nails and bring clean clothing appropriate to the class. Start with a schedule that leaves recovery time between sessions. The first month should establish movement patterns and trust, not demonstrate how much discomfort you can absorb. You are learning a physical language whose unfamiliar words can arrive quite quickly.

Make Consent Part of the Drill

Before partner work, clarify the task and agreed contact level. A technical drill should not become an unannounced contest. In submission grappling, learn the club’s tapping conventions, tap before pain and release immediately when a partner taps or calls out. In striking classes, ask for non-contact or controlled alternatives while building basic defence. Protective equipment does not eliminate concussion risk. Stop if you feel unsafe, dizzy or unwell; a suspected concussion needs prompt medical assessment, not another round to see whether it clears.

  • Learn the stop signal before the drill begins.
  • Report skin concerns and do not train with contagious infections.
  • Leave a session if boundaries are repeatedly ignored.

Measure What You Can Repeat

After class, write down one technical cue rather than a catalogue of everything you did badly. Perhaps you maintained your stance, kept breathing or stopped resisting a movement you did not understand. Eat, hydrate and sleep normally; avoid piling extra hard conditioning onto unfamiliar training. Persistent pain, swelling or reduced function deserves appropriate medical advice. Ask questions early and choose partners who can regulate their pace. Confidence should come from recognising positions and making better decisions, not from treating every exchange as a referendum on your toughness.

Control is a skill; exhaustion is only a feeling.

À retenir

  • Agree on controlled intensity before every partner drill.
  • Tap early in submission practice and release immediately.
  • Avoid using hard sparring as a fitness shortcut.
